They are grouped into National/Regional History, Comparative History, and Public History. A comparative and interdisciplinary approach is adopted, and special emphasis is given to scholarly exchange with other institutions and collaboration in teaching and research activities. The curriculum is designed to cultivate in students interest in the evolution of human civilization, and the ability to apply historical knowledge to their lives and careers. Besides teaching, teachers in the department are actively conducting research and participating in international conferences. The undergraduate programme provides courses in Japanese language and Japanese studies. The former are geared towards the mastery of the language while the latter cover Japanese politics, economy, cultural history, society, popular culture, and Hong Kong–Japan relations. The department has established exchange programmes with Japanese universities which enable second-year major students to spend a year in Japan to learn the language and experience the culture. Students can also benefit from a self-developed multi-media Japanese courseware, the only one of its kind in the territory. The MPhil programme offers professional training in five research areas: Japanese popular culture, Sino-Japanese relations, Japanese linguistics, anthropology and political economy of Japan. The newly introduced MA programme provides learning opportunities for individuals who intend to pursue a career in Japanese language teaching. Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages Tel.: 2609 7025/7911 Fax.: 2603 7755 E-mail: lin@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/lin The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages was formed in 2004 to answer the needs of society for graduates with intellectual acumen and bilingual or multilingual competency. It aims to provide systematic training in the structure, acquisition and use of language in various contexts. The department consists of two sections: linguistics and modern languages. The linguistics section offers a major programme in linguistics as well as two minor programmes, one in linguistics and one in language studies. The modern languages section offers minor programmes in French studies, German studies, as well as elective courses in Italian, Spanish, Hong Kong Sign Languages, Thai and Korean.
