English Language Teaching Unit Tel.: 2609 7465 Fax.: 2603 5157 E-mail: eltu-info@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eltu The English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) aims to equip CUHK graduates with a powerful command of English, so that they can benefit fully from their studies and compete successfully in the employment and higher education markets. ELTU is keenly aware of the increasing importance of global English and the impact of globalization on language use. The unit is also sensitive to students’ need to prepare for the new Common English Proficiency Assessment Scheme (CEPAS). It provides a range of courses which aim to develop students’ competence in English in appropriate academic and professional contexts. All undergraduates are required to take at least three credits of English (six credits for S6 entrants). S6 entrants are also required to take three credits in Expository Writing. With a teaching staff of about 25, ELTU enjoys a wealth of expertise in language education, especially in teaching adult Chinese learners. The teaching team’s strength is further enhanced by a good balance of native and non-native speakers, and by the staff’s experience of living and working in bilingual contexts around the world.
