Department Profiles • Medicine 115 offers postgraduate programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degrees. Besides providing quality teaching, the department promotes active research, which is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and techniques in confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, microfluorimetry, patch-clamping, stem cell gene therapy, and molecular biology. The theory and practice of clinical psychiatry are mainly taught in the fourth year. Staff members also offer supervision in PhD and MPhil projects. Research activities focus on psychiatric disorders of major public health concern. Clinical epidemiological and basic neuroscience investigations include dementia, schizophrenia, mood disorders, substance misuse, and sleep and eating disorders. The mission of the school is to contribute to the improvement of the health of populations locally, nationally and internationally through excellence in research, teaching and training in public health, working in collaboration with partners from all relevant disciplines and institutions. The school works closely with Department of Health, Hospital Authority and other voluntary organizations in order to put public health theory into practice to achieve better health services, health protection and ultimately for health improvement of the population. The school offers a wide range of taught courses including Master of Public Health, MBA in Healthcare and other research programmes in areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental health, communicable and non-communicable diseases. The school has been restructured in 2005. Nine centres have been incorporated within the structure of School of Public Health. The WHO Collaborating Centre for Sports Medicine and Health Promotion works in close association and all the appointments are joint between the Department of Community and Family Medicine and School of Public Health.
