128 Part 3 • Department Profiles and Programmes of Studies Medical students shall have continuous and end-of-year assessments on individual system panels and sit for the First, Second and Third (Part I & II) Professional Examinations before they graduate. Students are also required to serve one year’s internship at a recognized hospital before registering as a medical doctor. A four-year Nursing Programme is offered by the Nethersole School of Nursing to prepare graduates for registration as general nurses in accordance with the requirement of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. A Pharmacy Programme is offered by the School of Pharmacy. The BPharm programme follows the credit-unit system. Graduates must complete one year of pre- registration training before registration by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board as a pharmacist in Hong Kong. Besides taking the professional courses required by the faculty, students have to complete General Education, Physical Education, IT and language courses in compliance with University requirements. Programmes The courses under the various programmes are listed on pp.129–222. Explanatory notes on codes and signs used A course code comprises three letters of the alphabet, three Arabic numerals, and one numeral/letter. The first three letters stand for the subject (e.g. CHI, ENG, BIO, stand for Chinese, English, and Biology respectively). The first numeral stands for the level of study. Undergraduate courses are coded 1 to 4 while postgraduate courses are coded 5 to 9. The numeric code starting with 0 stands for a course by student- orientated teaching (STOT). Normally, lower level courses should be taken before upper level courses. However, for the sake of flexibility, most courses are open to students of all years of attendance subject to the satisfactory fulfilment of pre-requisite and co-requisite requirements. In fulfilling the total unit requirements of a major or minor programme, students should follow a prescribed study scheme and complete the required and elective courses.
