Postgraduate Studies • Social Science 295 Faculty of Social Science Division of Architecture MPhil–PhD Programme The MPhil and PhD are research degrees. Students have to engage in independent original research, either through participation in the work of the division’s thematic studios and research units, or by pursuing their own topics. Those who wish to do the latter should demonstrate the feasibility of the topic when applying for admission. In design, the centres of activity are the four thematic studios: 1. Habitation 2. Technics 3. Tectonics 4. Urbanization The research units are: 1. Architectural Projects Unit 2. Centre for Housing Innovations 3. Chinese Architecture Heritage Unit 4. Community Participation Unit 5. Computation and Simulation Unit 6. Environmental and Sustainable Architectural Design Unit MArch Programme The programme leads to a professional degree in architecture. It consists of two parts: studios and courses. The instruction of design studio is based on the system of thematic studios, which are organized primarily on the basis of design position irrespective of academic years. MArch I students have to select one studio each term from four studios: habitation, technics, tectonics, and urbanization. MArch II students work for two terms within a studio related to their final project. The theoretic courses are grouped into four areas: communication, humanities, technology and professional practice. Students are required to take a set of core courses and can choose from a broad range of electives. They can also take elective courses offered by other departments. In the first year of study, students are required to take one of the research studies courses offered by faculty members based on their current research projects. The final project is a one-year independent research and design work in which students can demonstrate their ability in defining a study topic, conducting research, formulating a design programme, and developing it into a design project. Courses Offered First Year 1. Advanced Habitation Studio 2. Advanced Technics Studio 3. Advanced Tectonics Studio 4. Advanced Urbanization Studio 5. Urban Design and Planning 6. Advanced Construction 7. Advanced Building Services 8. Professional Practice and Management
