376 Part 4 • Research Units and University Extensions Language Acquisition Laboratory (LAL) was established in early 2006 to promote the theoretical study of language acquisition and empirical research on the acquisition of Chinese languages. The laboratory studies the development of language in the individual, combining methods of naturalistic observation with experimental techniques. It investigates the language production, language comprehension, and phonetic perception of children, with particular emphasis on early language. The laboratory addresses issues of language learnability, integrating language acquisition with linguistic theory, and studying language learning from the interdisciplinary perspective of cognitive science. Special emphasis is placed on the acquisition of language in the mutli-lingual and multi-dialectal context of China. Current projects are concerned with the phonetic perception of young infants, infant babbling, and the emergence of phonology, lexicon and syntax in children from one to two years of age. The centre provides that first genetics screening service in South East Asia for eye disease, including primary open angle glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, retinoblastoma, sex-linked retinoschisis, and best vitelliform macular dystrophy. It also conducts up-front research including mapping of new disease causing genes for glaucoma, high myopia, congenital cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The centre utilizes whole genome scanning, linkage analysis, DNA miroarray, and high throughput molecular technologies in its genome research, which also includes functional and structural characterization of specific genes, such as MYOC for glaucoma, RBI for retinoblastoma, and RPI for retinitis pigmentosa. Linguistics Research Laboratory Tel.: 2609 7911 (Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages) Fax.: 2603 7755 (Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages) E-mail: lin@cuhk.edu.hk The Linguistics Research Laboratory was set up in 1985 to support linguistics-related teaching and research. The laboratory provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration in general and applied linguistics research, ranging from lexicon and morphology, syntax and semantics, phonetics and phonology, to first/second/bilingual language acquisition, dialects and minority language in China, corpus linguistics, sign linguistics, and applied linguistics. It is equipped with computers and software for speech analysis. It houses corpora data in monolingual, bilingual and multilingual contexts, particularly corpora contributed by the linguistics faculty.
