The Chan Chun Ha Hostel — the fourth student hostel of the College — was completed in August 2004, providing an additional 300 student hostel places. The Si Yuan Amphitheatre was opened on 15 September 2006. To build up a smoke-free and environmental friendly campus, United College conducted a campus improvement project in summer 2005. The project included the redesign of the landscape, relocation of carpark and paving project, etc. In 2006–07, a total of 2,548 students were assigned to United College, of whom 1,225 were male and 1,323 female. Shaw College Named after its Patron, Shaw College was made possible by the generosity of Sir Run Run Shaw, who donated HK$110 million to CUHK for the founding of the fourth constituent College. The ordinance that gives legal effect to this important development of the University was passed by the Legislative Council in July 1986 and became law on 1 August of the same year. A board of trustees of Shaw College has accordingly come into being, charting the course of the College’s development in collaboration with the Planning Committee for Shaw College appointed by
