Calendar 2007–08

The Constituent Colleges 25 Part 1 the University Council. Chaired by Prof. Ma Lin, former Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, the Planning Committee was advised by Sir Quo-wei Lee, Mr. Louis Page, the late Dr. T.K. Ann and Mr. H.J. Shen. The foundation stone of the College campus was laid by Sir David Akers-Jones, then Acting Governor, and Sir Run Run Shaw, the Patron, on 12 January 1987. In June 1987, the College set up its temporary office at No. 1, Chung Chi Teaching Block. In September 1989, Student Hostel I, which could accommodate 579 students, was completed. In October the same year, the administration building, Wen Lan Tang; and the visiting scholars units cum staff quarters, Ya Qun Lodge, were also opened. The College then moved to its campus built on 4.5 hectares of land at the northwestern part of the University campus overlooking the Tolo Harbour. Other facilities including a computer laboratory, a reading room, a multi-function hall, a gymnasium, conference rooms and canteens also came into use. On 2 March 1990, Shaw College was officially opened by the then Hong Kong Governor, Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson; and the Patron of Shaw College, Sir Run Run Shaw. The opening ceremony was well attended by some 500 guests. In 1992, the College Lecture Theatre with a seating capacity of 500 was completed. Student Hostel II which could accommodate 289 students was also opened to meet the increasing demand for hostel accommodation. New facilities have also been added over the years. The extension project of Hostel II, which began in July 1998, was completed May 2001, offering an additional 298 hostel places. The New Colleges Morningside College The Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Ltd. have donated a total of HK$100 million to establish the Morningside College, which can accommodate 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining basis. S.H. Ho College The S.H. Ho Foundation Ltd. has donated HK$170 million to establish the S.H. Ho College, which can accommodate 600 students, also on a fully residential and communal dining basis. C.W. Chu College With the donation of HK$100 million fromMr. Peter Yip, the C.W. Chu College has been established which can accommodate 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining model. n n n
