The Constituent Colleges 25 Part 1 Under the Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholars Programme, world-renowned scholars are invited to speak to students. Those who came in the past include Prof. Lee Yuen-tseh, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry; Prof. Yang Chen-ning, Nobel Laureate in Physics; Prof. Yau Shing-tung, Fields Medalist and Prof. Charles K. Kao, Father of Fibre Optics. The College also organizes annually the Shaw Prize Lectures with Shaw laureates from the fields of astronomy, life science and medicine, and mathematical sciences as the speakers. The College works hand-in-hand with student bodies to enrich campus life by organizing different kinds of activities. Among them, the big four annual student events are Orientation Camp, ‘Shaw Lane’ evening bazaar, College Founder’s Day celebrations and a singing contest. Besides recognizing academic excellence, the College also encourages non-academic achievements by establishing scholarships that reward active participation or outstanding performance in extra-curricular activities, community service, sports or possession of leadership and special talents. There are a number of college facilities that cater for the needs of students and staff. Among them, some are unique on CUHK campus. They include Lee Woo Sing Hong Kong History Resource Centre, a band room, Lam Kin Chung Computer Laboratory and a multimedia laboratory. The 500-seat Lecture Theatre auditorium is ideal for seminars and performances, and theYueh ChiaoArt Gallery is frequently used for exhibitions. The two hostels Kuo Mou Hall and Student Hostel II accommodate a total of 1,195 students. Sports facilities include an indoor sports and multi-purpose hall, a gymnasium, a table tennis room, a dance room, an outdoor tennis courts, and a basketball/volleyball court. There are the HERBSnSENSES Chinese Medicinal Plants Garden, a BBQ site and anAlumni Trail lined with plaques engraved with the names of graduates. In 2008–09, Shaw had a student population of 2,700, of whom 1,330 were male and 1,370 female. Morningside College The College was established in 2006 with very generous support from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Ltd. It has a special vision to cultivate among its students a commitment to serve the community of Hong Kong, China and the world. Located between University Avenue and Clinic Road, and next to the University Sports Centre and Pentecostal Mission Hall Complexes (High Block and Low Block), it can accommodate 300 students on a fully residential and
