CUHK Newsletter No.22 September 1991 Prof. Zhou Guangzhao Physicist A physicist of great renown in China, Prof. Zhou specializes in elementary particles, physics of explosions and radiation fluid dynamics. As president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Zhou has provided policy guidance for and made major contributions towards the scientific and technological developments in China. He has also held important posts in various academic institutions including Qinghua University and Beijing University. He was elected Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences in Trieste, Italy in 1985 , Academician of the National Academy of Sciences in the USA in 1987, Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences in USSR in 1988 , Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of Cz e c ho s l o v a k ia and Ho n o r a ry Memb er of the Bulgarian Academy of Science in 1989 , and chairman of the Pacific Science Association in June 1991. Prof Zhou has also been a staunch supporter of academic exchange and research collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and this university. Dr. Chiang Chen Industrialist Founder and chairman of the Chen Hsong Holdings Ltd., Dr. Chiang has made significant contributions to the development of industry and technology in Hong Kong. To promote industrial education, Dr. Chiang established the Chiangs' Industrial Charity Foundation in 1990 to finance the training of talented industrial scientists and technologists of Chinese origin. Apart from sponsoring many training programmes organized by The Chinese University, he has made a generous donation for the construction of the Chiangs Building on the campus to provide accommodation for visiting scholars. Dr. Chiang's remarkable achievements and his contributions to the local community have earned him much respect. He was made Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 1986 and was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering by the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1990. 111 PDP Graduates in 1991 A total of 111 students from the Part-time Degree Programmes completed their undergraduate studies this summer. Of these, 35 are from the Business Administration Programme, 36 from the Chinese and English Programme, 11 from the Music Programme and 29 from the Social Work Programme. HK$1 Mi l l ion Donat ion for Kidney Research The University recently received a donation of HK$1 million from the local Lions Clubs to conduct research into kidney diseases and disorders of the urinary system. Prof. Arthur K. C. Li, associate dean of the Faculty of Medicine, represented the University to receive the donation on 31st August. The money will be used to set up an endowment fund, and interest income will finance various kidney research projects undertaken by the Department of Medicine and the Department of Surgery. The two departments will study factors leading to the formation of kidney stones, the reasons for kidney diseases in different age groups, and treatment methods. 2
