No.22 September 1991 CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENTS The 42nd Congregation and Special Arrangements on the Congregation Day The 42nd congregation for the conferment of honorary and higher degrees will be held on Thursday, 24th October at 3.00 p.m. in the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson, will officiate at the ceremony, which will be followed by a reception at the Benjamin Franklin Centre Staff Dining Room. This year four distinguished persons will be awarded honorary degrees. They are Dr. Edwin H. C. Tao, Dr. L i Kwok-ting, Prof. Zhou Guangzhao and Dr. Chiang Chen. On the same occasion about 300 graduates will be granted higher degrees. Citations will be written and delivered by the public orator. Dr. Chou Ying Hsiung, reader in English. Dr. Archie C. C. Lee, lecturer in religion, will be the mace-bearer. Prof. Zhou Guangzhao will address the congregation on behalf of the honorary graduates. Members of the staff are reminded that classes will not be suspended on the congregation day on 24th October. It will be left to the discretion of individual teachers who have classes on that day to make alternative arrangements if they wish to attend the congregation. Robing Room for Procession Members Staff members joining the official procession should assemble by 2.30 p.m. on the ground floor of the Y. C. Liang Hall, which will serve as the Robing Room. Marshalling of the procession will begin at 2.40 p.m. on the Central Avenue outside the Y.C. Liang Hall. Traffic Arrangements Traffic on the Central Avenue will be made one-way only (west-bound) from 1.30 p.m. on the congregation day, leaving one lane of the avenue for parking. Appropriate traffic signs will be put up and campus guards will be on hand to assist motorists. BFC Staff & Student Canteens Temporarily Closed The Benjamin Franklin Centre Staff Dining Room will be closed all day on 24th October and the Student Canteen will be closed from 1.00 p.m. Professorial Inaugural Lecture Prof. S. J. Oppenheimer, professor of paediatrics, will deliver his inaugural lecture entitled ‘Myth, Migration, Mutation, and Malaria in Melanesia' in Lecture Theatre 1, Lady Shaw Building, on 11th October at 5.00 p.m. All are welcome. United College 35th Anniversary Ball To celebrate the 35th anniversary of United College, the Alumni Association and the Staff Association of the college will jointly organize a grand ball on 26th October 1991 in the Grand Ball Room of Regent Hotel. There will be a full range of entertaining programmes for the evening and a lucky draw with many attractive prizes. Tickets will be sold at HK$300 per head and are now available at the United College Dean of Students' Office. For reservations and enquiries, please call Tel. No. 6097570. 1991-92 Distinguished Visiting Scholar of United College Prof. Benjamin Schlesinger, professor of social work at the University of Toronto, will visit United College from 21st October to 2nd November 1991 as the first Distinguished Visiting Scholar of United College in 1991-92. During his stay on campus, Prof. Schlesinger w i ll give three open lectures in Lecture Theatre C1 of United College: Lecture Title Date Time 1. Staff Review 1991-92 Applications/nominations are invited from all full-time teaching and non-teaching staff on Terms of Service (A) and Instructors, in respect of staff development grants, retirement/extension of service and promotion to be considered in the staff review exercise in the academic year 1991-92. The deadlines for submissions are as follows: 5th October 1991 - for retirement/extension of service in respect of full-time teaching staff on Terms of Service (A) and Instructors. 2nd November 1991 - for staff development grants in respect of full-time teaching and non- teaching staff on Terms of Service (A) and Instructors. (A list of Staff Development Programmes was already published in the August 1991 issue of the CUHK Newsletter,) 16th November 1991 - for promotion in respect of full-time teaching staff on Terms of Service (A) and Instructors. 30th November 1991 - for retirement/extension of service/ promotion in respect of non-teacing staff on Terms of Service (A).
