CUHK Newsletter No31 June 1992 More Funds for Research on China's Economic Development Three Taiwanese entrepreneurs in Hong Kong recently donated HK$500,000 to the University to support research into the economic reform and development of China. The donation from Messrs. Wong Mau Hung, Hong Wing Cheung and Lam Yiu Ming will be used to set up a permanent fund to finance the activities of the China's Reform and Development Research Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS). One such activity is a conference on China's regional economic development to be held in May 1993. The HKIAPS has been studying the process, content, and results of China's political, economic and social reforms, trying to analyse different reform proposals and strategies and to establish a set of development models for China. Current research projects which involve scholars from China include studies on the productivity, efficiency and reform of China's economy, China's regional economic development, and the economic reforms and open-door policy in Guangdong. Intervarsity Debating Contest CUHK vs. University of Macau The University's Cantonese debating team captured the champion trophy in the 1992 intervarsity debating contest held between The Chinese University and the University of Macau on 30th May at New Town Plaza, Sha Tin. Mr. Yip Kam Leung on the CUHK team was also selected best speaker in the contest. Speaking for the motion ‘Beauty contests should be abolished', the CUHK team won by a margin of two to one after an hour of heated debate. The contest is an annual event organized by the two universities to promote cultural exchange and to stimulate student interest in debating activities. Services to the Community and International Organizations - Prof. Yeung Yue-man, professor of geography, has been reappointed by HE the Governor as amember of the Metro Planning Committee for two years from 1st April 1992. • Prof. S. T. Chang, professor of biology, has been invited by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation to be a member of the validation panel of the B.Sc.(Hons) in Applied Sciences (Applied Biology and Applied Chemistry) of the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong from 26th to 28th February 1992. Prof. Chang has also been invited by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to serve as coordinator of the Mushroom Germplasm Bank working group for four years from 4th May 1992. - Dr. Frank H. Fu, senior lecturer in physical education, has been appointed as an honorary member of the China Sports Science Society from March 1992. - Mr. Stephen C. M. Yam, lecturer in accountancy, has been invited to be an honorary auditor of the Hong Kong Association for Educational Communication and Technology from April 1992. • Dr. Michael S. Y. Chan, lecturer in diagnostic radiology and organ imaging, has been appointed by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals as honorary consultant in diagnostic radiology and organ imaging of Kwong Wah Hospital for one year from 1st April 1992. - Prof. Lloyd Owen, chairman of the Department of Community and Family Medicine, has been elected as chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Occupational Medicine for one year from 7th May 1992. - Dr. Wong Tze Wai, senior lecturer in community and family medicine, has been re-elected as a council member of the Hong Kong Society of Occupational Medicine for one year from 7th May 1992. • Dr. Ignatius Yu, lecturer in community and family medicine, has been elected as a council member and honorary secretary of the Hong Kong Society of Occupational Medicine for one year from 7th May 1992.
