I guess they found my work quite satisfactory, for very soon I was put in charge of makingwooden furniture for the college. In 1984, I was transferred to the carpentry team of the newly established Technical Services Unit, specifically responsible' for making cupboards, tables and shelves for different departments in the Science Centre. There is really nothing to toast about my craftsmanship, although from time to time some colleagues will ask me to make a few pieces for them, and although I make most of the furniture in my own house. The things I make are usually practical and plain, with no frills, and no fanciful design. I am fully contented with my life and work here. Everything is just fine and I intend to stay in my job for as long as I can. Chan Kam-chuen General Clerk, Business Section, University Bursary Before I settled down in the University 25 years ago, I had worked in a garment factory, a dye- works, and also the YMCA. In the beginning I worked in the Chung Chi College Bursary and was responsible for general accounting work, the preparation of photos for staff identity cards, and other clerical duties. When University administration became centralized, I was reassigned to the Business Section of the University Bursary. My duties here include purchasing, stock-keeping, coordinating the supply of stationery to all units, and the loaning of academic dresses. Departmental demand for stationery has increased tremendously over the years with the University's gradual expansion, and my workload has become heavier and heavier. The busiest month is usually June when we need to prepare year-end financial statements. Luckily, I've had very understanding supervisors. M y former supervisor, Mr. K. C. Young, assigned a colleague to share my workload and secured computer facilities to help streamline procedures. I take pride in being the first one in the Business Section to use computers. My present supervisor, Mr. Patrick Yiu, has not only taught me how to increase efficiency in handling paper wo r k, but has also encouraged me to undertake further studies to improve my job skills. Last year I enrolled in a two-year course in stores supervision at the Shatin Technical Institute. I am an amateur in weightlifting, and was once the weightlifting champion in Chung Chi College's staff-student athletic meet in the sixties. I was also a member of the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force for over 10 years, during which period I picked up shooting as a hobby. Every now and then I w i ll make special trips to Shenzhen to practise the sport. Personalia 4
