No.31 June 1992 CUHK Newsletter announcements Scholarships at the Harvard-Yenching Institute Applications are now invited from faculty members in the humanities and social sciences for two Harvard-Yenching scholarships for the academic year 1993-94. (1) Visiting Scholars Programme This programme offers one-year fellowships to regular faculty members to study and conduct research at Harvard University. Applied fields of studies such as business management, library science and the more practical aspects of law, etc. will not be subsidized. The study or research should not lead to the award of a degree. Applicants must be aged 42 or under on 1 st September 1992 , have been teaching for four consecutive years prior to the award of the scholarship, and speak fluent English. The award covers round-trip airfare for the successful applicant, a stipend of US$1,650 per month for up to 11 months, fees for health insurance, and the use of the Harvard Clinic. (2) Doctoral Scholarship Programme The programme supports junior faculty members to pursue Ph.D. studies. Practical fields of studies such as business management, library science, mass communication, teaching English as a foreign language and social work, etc. are excluded from this programme. Applicants must be regular faculty members who will return to teach at The Chinese University upon completion of their studies. They are required to sit for the TOEFL test before October 1992 and to take the Graduate Record Examinations. They also need to have gained admission to Harvard University or other major universities for Ph.D. studies before they can qualify for the scholarship. The scholarship is tenable for one academic year (usually from September to June) and the recipient may apply for renewal thereafter. It covers transportation to and from the University attended, tuition, health fees, and a living stipend (to be determined with reference to the local cost of living and other sources of support). Applications endorsed by the department/unit head and the faculty dean should be forwarded to Mr. Raymond Leung, Assistant Secretary (Personnel) on or before 24th July 1992 for presentation to the relevant committees for consideration. After the University has submitted its nominations to the Harvard-Yenching Institute, shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by a representative of the institute in Hong Kong around October or November 1992. Certificate Courses In Theology The Theology Division and the Department of Extramural Studies will jointly offer one-year elementary and intermediate certificate courses in theology this October. Elementary Course Course contents will include introduction to theology, introduction to the Old and New Testaments, church history, Christian education, and pastoral care. Intermediate Course Course contents will include theology in social context, synoptic Gospels, Old Testament theology in Hong Kong context, Chinese church history. Christian ethics, and counselling and growth. Those who are interested should apply before 8th August. Application for Research Grants Applications for the following research grants arc now invited: 1. Earmarked grants from the UPGC Research Grants Council 1993-94 2. Research grants from the Croucher Foundation (October 1992 exercise) 3. Research grants from the Epson Foundation (October 1992 exercise) Applications should be made on prescribed forms and conform to a stipulated format. Completed applications should be scot to the Research Administration Office at Room 306, John Fulton Centre by 4th September 1992 (internal deadline). Dinner Party to Celebrate the 70th Birthday of Prof. Chen Ning Yang The Organizing Committee for Prof. Chen Meg Yang's 70th Birthday Celebration will hold a birthday dinner party in honour of Prof. Yang, Distinguished Professor-at-Large of the University, on 5th August at 7:00 p.m. in the Jade Ballroom of the Hotel Furama Kempinski Hong Kong. On the same occasion, contributions will be invited for the establishment of the C. N, Yang Visiting Professorship Fund. Money raised will be used to invite world-renowned 9
