No35 October 1992 • CUHK Newsletter Symposium on Research in Chinese Medicine A sympos i um on ‘Research in Chinese Medicine' was held at the Cho Yiu Conference Hall from 2nd to 4th September. The symposium was co-sponsored by the University's Chinese Medicine Material Research Centre and the National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine in Taipei. About 100 experts in Chinese medicine from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China gathered to share their experience and expertise in the field. Officiating at the opening ceremony were Mr. Kwing-yee Li, chief pharmacist of the government's Department of Health; Prof. Charles K. Kao, vice-chancellor of this university; Prof. S. T. Chang of the Department of Biology; and Prof. Chieh-fu Chen of the National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine in Taiwan. There were 15 plenary lectures on topics ranging from anti-ageing, anticancer, and anti-AIDS herbs to fertility regulating and cardioactive medicines, and the bioactive components of Chinese medicines. Two discussion sessions on 'Authentication, Quality Control and Safety of Chinese Medicines' and ‘Priority Areas and Strategies for Research in Chinese Medicine' were organized. On display were also a large number of posters on topics such as safety of Chinese medicines and the effects of polysaccharide peptides from mushrooms. Conference on New International Order and Asian Pacific Development T h e Japan and Asia-Pacific Development Research Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and the Hong Kong Taiwan Chamber of Commerce jointly organize a two-day conference on 10th and 11th September to study the new international order and economic and political developments in the Asia-Pacific region. About 30 scholars and experts from 10 different countries and regions in the Asian Pacific area attended the function and discussed a wide range of topics, including the impact of the new international order on East and Southeast Asia, the prospect of economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, global issues after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and the development of relations among China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
