No35 October 1992 CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENTS Professorial Appointments Professor of Marketing Dr. Lee Kam-hon has been appointed professor of marketing from 1st August 1992. Prof. Lee graduated B.Comm. in 1967 and M. Comm. in 1969 from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then served as assistant lecturer in business administration and was posted to the Department of Marketing and International Business in 1974. Prof. Lee took leave in 1972 and studied marketing at Northwestern University, USA, for three years. He was awarded the degree of Ph.D. in 1975. In the same year, he was appointed as lecturer in marketing and international business. He was promoted to senior lecturer in 1981 and reader in 1987. Prof. Lee has been serving at CUHK for more than 23 years, and has made significant contributions to the University's academic development and administration. Prof. Lee is married, with two children. Professor of Organization and Management Dr. Nyaw Mee-kau has been appointed professor of organization and management from 1st August 1992. Born in Malaysia, Prof. Nyaw was educated in Hong Kong and graduated B.S.Sc. from The Chinese University in 1967. He then pursued postgraduate studies in North America and obtained an MA degree from Vanderbilt University in 1969, an MBA degree from the University of British Columbia in 1973 , and his Ph.D.degree from Simon Fraser University in 1977. Before joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1977 as lecturer in general business management and personnel management, Prof. Nyaw had taught in Simon Fraser University and Nanyang University in Singapore. Prof. Nyaw has served the University for 15 years and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1983 and reader in 1987. Prof. Nyaw is married, with two children. Fare Increase for Shuttle Light Bus Service From 6th October 1992, the fare for the shuttle light bus service on campus has been increased from $2.5 to $3 per trip. Coupons in sets of 10 at $30 per set are obtainable from the bus-driver. The revision has been made to offset rising operating costs. 30th Anniversary Christmas Cards To commemorate its 30th anniversary in 1993 , the University has printed special Christmas cards bearing the 30th anniversary logo and featuring the University campus and the four constituent colleges. The cards will be available for sale at HK$15 per set (with five cards in each set) at the souvenir counter on the ground floor of the John Fulton Centre from 20th October. Local Education Allowances Following the government's revision of the rates of local education allowances for dependent children of civil servants, the maximum allowance payable to eligible staff in the University has been increased from 1st September as follows: For each child attending a primary school: HK$21,150 For each child attending a secondary school: (i) Form I to Form III — HK$35,025 (ii) Form IV and above - HK$33,112 The basic charge an appointee has to pay towards the school fee of his child who attends Form IV or above has also been revised from HK$2,100 to HK$2,550 per year. Overnight Parking From the Security Officer: With effect from 1st October 1992 , only those vehicles with valid‘A','B'or 'D' or type University Vehicle Registration Labels on their windscreens will be allowed to park on the campus overnight. Any vehicle violating such a regulation is liable to be impounded without further notice. This rule however does not apply to residential areas on the campus. Staff members who require to have their vehicles parked overnight on a temporary basis 9
