No.36 November 1992 CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENTS Professorial Appointment Professor ofClinical Oncology Prof. Philip James Johnson has been appointed professor of c l i n i cal oncology from 1st October 1992. Prof. Johnson graduated M.B. Ch.B. in 1972 from the Medical School of Manchester University. After one year of internship, he served as senior house officer at four major postgraduate centres in London and passed the MRCP examination in 1974. In 1975 he began his attachment to the Liver Unit at King's College Hospital, London, where he gained his initial training in hepatology and an introduction to clinical research. Prof. Johnson has extensive experience treating liver, gastroenterological and pancreatic diseases, and teaching postgraduate courses in these subjects. He obtained his MD from the University of Manchester and became FRCP in 1991. Before joining this university. Prof. Johnson worked with the Institute of Liver Studies, King's College Hospital and King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry as consultant physician. Prof. Johnson's major research interests are the consequences of and factors influencing malignant change in patients with chronic liver diseases, pancreatic carcinoma, and more recently autoimmune chronic hepatitis. Prof. Johnson is married, with two daughters. The 45th Congregation and Special Arrangements on the Congregation Day The 45th congregation for the conferment of first degrees will be held at the University Mall on Thursday, 10th December 1992 at 3.00 p.m. This year a total of 1,618 graduates will be awarded bachelor's degrees. HE the Governor and Chancellor of the University, the Rt. Hon. Christopher Patten, will officiate at the ceremony, which will be followed by a reception at the University Square. Robing Roomfor Procession Members Staff members joining the official procession should assemble by 2.30 p.m. at the conference hall on the ground floor of the University Administration Building, which will serve as the robing room. Marshalling of the procession will begin at 2.40 p.m. The procession will leave the Administration Building at 2.56 p.m. Traffic Arrangements Traffic on the Central Avenue will be made one-way only (west-bound) from 1.30 p.m., leaving one lane of the avenue for parking. The section between the Leung Kau Kui Building and the Y.C. Liang Hall will remain two-way. The carpark near the L i Dak Sum Building and the parking area outside the University Administration Building will be reserved for members of the procession. Appropriate road signs will be put up and campus guards will be on hand to assist motorists. Suspension of Classes Classes for Medical Studies (Year 1 & 2), the Intercalated Degree Programme in Medical Sciences, and the Pharmacy Programme will be suspended from 1.30 to 5.30 p.m. Other full-time undergraduate classes will be suspended for the whole day. BFC Staff Canteen to be Closed The Benjamin Franklin Centre Staff Canteen will be closed on 10th December to be used as the robing room for graduates. Art Gallery to Extend Opening Hours For the convenience of guests attending the congregation who may also be interested in visiting the Art Gallery, the gallery will extend its opening hours until 5.00 p.m. on 10th December. Wet Weather Arrangement In case of wet weather, the congregation will be held at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Professorial Inaugural Lecture Prof. K. J. Sellick, professor of nursing, will deliver his inaugural lecture entitled The Evolution of Nursing: from Handmaiden to Independent Practitioner' on 20th November at 5.30 p.m. in Lecture Theatre 6, Lady Shaw Building. All are welcome. Symposium on Accounting in December The Department of Accountancy will host a symposium on 'Accounting in the Changing Chinese Environment, at the Cho -Y iu Ha ll on Thursday, 3rd December 1992.
