No.42 May 1993 CUHK N e w s l e t t e r ANNOUNCEMENTS Council Membership Dr. Wong Kwan-yiu, reader in geography, has recently been elected by the Assembly of Fellows of United College to serve as a member of the University Council for a period up to 18th October 1996. Professorial Inaugural Lectures Two professorial inaugural lectures have been scheduled for May and June. A ll are welcome. Prof. Michael H. Bond, professor of psychology, will deliver his inaugural lecture entitled 'Between the Yin and the Yang: The Identity of the Hong Kong Chinese' on Wednesday, 21st May at 5.00 p.m. in lecture theatre 6, Lady Shaw Building. Prof. Lee Kam Hon, professor of marketing, will deliver his inaugural lecture entitled 'Solving Local Problems and Constructing Theories in Marketing' on Friday, 4th June at 5.00 p.m. in lecture theature 6, Lady Shaw Building. Applications for Research Grants Applications for the following research grants are now invited: Internal Deadline 1. Earmarked research grants 4th September 1993 1994-95 from the Research Grants Council 2. Research grants from the 1st June 1993 Epson Foundation Applications should be made on prescribed forms and conform to a stipulated format. Completed applications should be forwarded to the Research Administration Office at Room 306, John Fulton Centre. Application forms and format guidelines can be obtained from the Research Administration Office (Ext.7865). Staff Review - Non-teaching Staff Members on Terms of Service (A)(B)&(C) Circulars have just been sent out to department chairmen/ unit heads to invite nominations and recommendations concerning the promotion of non-teaching staff members on Terms of Service (A), (B) and (C). This is the second review exercise this year and results of the review will become effective on 1st January 1994 or after. A ll nominations and recommendations should reach Mr. S. S. Tam, secretary of the Administrative Affairs Committee, c/o Personnel Office, Room 203, University Administration Building (Ext. 7269), on or before 30th June 1993. The Administrative Affairs Committee and the Sub-Committee on Junior Staff Affairs will in due course deliberate on the nominations and make decisions/recommendations where appropriate for implementation. From 1993-94 onwards, there will be two staff review exercises each year instead of one. Non-fee-charging Bus Service for Staff in Summer The University will provide a non-fee-charging bus service during the months of June, July and August (except on Sundays and public holidays) to facilitate those staff members who travel to and from work by train. To tie in with University working hours, the bus will run on the following schedule from 1st June to 31st August: Up Route Day and Time Itinerary Monday to Saturday at Lingnan Stadium → CU Sports 8.30a.m. and 8.40a.m. Centre → Y.C. Liang Hall → (two trips per day) K.K. Leung Bldg. → United College → New Asia College Down Route Day and Time Itinerary Monday to Friday at New Asia College → United 5.05p.m. and 5.20p.m. College → University Admin. (two trips per day) Bldg. → CU Sports Centre → Saturday at 12.45p.m. University Train Station (one trip per day) Please direct all enquiries to the Transport Unit (Ext. 7990). United College Graduation Ceremony The 1992-93 Graduation Ceremony of United College will be held on 5th June at 10.30 a.m. at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The Hon. Christine Loh, Legislative Councillor, and Mr. Thomas H. C. Cheung, president of the United College Alumni Association, will officiate at the ceremony, which will be followed by the taking of group photographs on the college campus and a tea reception. Development Grant From CUWO The Chinese University Women's Organization (CUWO) has made available HK$5,000 to help a female student/staff of this University to undertake courses that will further her academic or career development. The money can be used to purchase course materials, subsidize travel or living expenses, or meet other specific financial needs. Unit and department heads are now invited to send nominations to the Secretary, CUWO, c/o Residence 7, Flat 8B, CUHK before the end of May.
