No.44 July 1993 CUHK Newsletter 380 Awarded Diplomas-in-Education This year, a total of 380 students successfully completed the diploma-in-education programmes run by the Faculty of Education. Of the lot, 65 were from the one-year full-time programme, 123 f r om the two-year part-time evening programme, and 192 f r om the two-year part-time day programme. A graduation ceremony for these students was held on 26th June, and officiating at the ceremony was the Hon. Timothy Ha Wing-ho, chairman of the Board of Education. McMillen and Michael E. DeGolyer, 333 pages, paperback, HK$160. Service to the Community and International Organizations • Dr. Leslie N. K. Lo, dean of education, and Dr. Wong Hin-wah, lecturer in curriculum and instruction, have been appointed by HE the Governor as members of the Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and Qualification for two years from 1st May 1993. Dr. Lohas also been appointed by HE the Governor as a member of the Board of Education for two years from 1st July 1993. • Prof. Ho Kam-fai of the Department of Social Work has been reappointed by HE the Governor as a member of a panel set up for the purpose of enforcing Section 22 of the Immigration Ordinance. The appointment is for two years from 1st June 1993. Prof. Ho has also been reappointed a member of the Deportation Tribunals for two years from 1st June 1993. • Prof. P. C. Leung of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology has been appointed by HE the Governor as a member of the Hygiene Services Committee from 1st June 1993. • Prof. Charles K. Kao, the vice- chancellor, has been appointed by HE the Governor as a member of the Board of the Hong Kong Industrial Technology Centre Corporation from 1st June 1993. • Prof. C. N. Chen, head of Shaw College, has been appointed by HE the Governor as a Non-official Justice of the Peace for Hong Kong from 3rd June 1993. • Prof. Yeung Yue-man of the Department of Geography has been nominated by the University to serve as a member of the Hong Kong Examinations Authority. • Dr. Julian A. J. H. Critchley, reader in clinical pharmacology, has been reappointed a member of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for three years from 4th July 1993. • Dr. Agnes M. C. Ng, senior lecturer in social work, has been appointed by the Director of Social Welfare to serve as a member of The Working Group on Services for Youth at Risk from 15th July 1993. • Dr. Chan Wing-wah, senior lecturer in music, was presented a certificate of honour by the Chinese Culture Promotion Society on 6th June in Beijing in recognition of his accomplishment in music composition. Dr. Chan has also been invited by the Urban Council to serve as honorary advisor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra from June 1993. • Dr. Robert E. Allinson, senior lecturer in philosophy, has been invited by the Department of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo to be an external member on a doctoral committee for a Ph.D. dissertation on the subject of Chuang-Tzu.
