No.46 September 1993 CUHK Newsletter 170 PDP Graduates in 1993 A total of 170 students from the Part-time Degree Programmes completed their undergraduate studies this summer. Of these, 34 are from the Business Administration Programme, 35 from the Chinese and English Programme, 12 from the Music Programme, 29 from the Physical Education Programme, 38 from the Primary Education Programme and 22 from the Social Work Programme. They will be awarded bachelor's degrees in the 47th congregation to be held in December. Budding Scientists Visit the University A group of 40 students from secondary schools in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, China, and the Philippines visited the University on 2nd August to gain exposure to scientific research at the tertiary level. All of them were keen participants of the 26th Joint School Science Exhibition. Officiating at the welcoming ceremony was Prof. Kenneth Young, dean of science, who introduced to the young visitors the important and exciting research projects being conducted in CUHK and in Hong Kong, and encouraged them to take part in the creation of new knowledge through scientific research in the years to come. The highlight of the visit was a short lecture by Prof. Yau Shing-tung, world famous mathematician, who talked to the students about modern developments in mathematics. US Swimming National Team on Campus With six Barcelona Olympic gold medallists and four current world record holders in the squad, the US Swimming National Team trained at the University from 3rd to 9th August to prepare for the Pan Pacific Championships to be held in Japan the following week. Star athletes on the team included four-time Olympic gold medallist Janet Evans, women's 100 metres freestyle world record holder Jenny Thompson, and 200 metres breaststroke world record holder Anita Nall. Dennis Pursley, director of the team, said that training in Hong Kong could help their swimmers adapt to the East Asian climate and food, and recover from the jet lag. They had also found accommodation and sports facilities on the CUHK campus most agreeable. Service to the Community and International Organizations • Prof. R. L. Jones of the Department of Pharmacology has been appointed by HE the Governor as a member of the Pharmacy and Poisons Appeal Tribunal for three years from 1st August 1993. • Prof. Ho Kam Fai of the Department of Social Work has been appointed by HE the Governor as a panel member of the Regional Services Appeals Board for three years from 10th August 1993. • Prof. Arthur K. C. Li, dean of medicine, has been invited to serve as a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Ministry of Health, United Arab Emirates. • Dr. Tam Yue Him, senior lecturer in history, has been appointed (1) a member of the selection committee of the Japanese Government Scholarships for Hong Kong students from 1993 to 1994; (2) a member of the selection committee of a scholarship of the Japan Society of Hong Kong from 1993 to 1994; (3) a member of the prepa- ratory board of Shanghai College of Arts and Design from July 1993. • Dr. Chan Wing-wah, senior lecturer in music, has been elected chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild for two years from 1993. • Dr. Simon S. M. Ho, senior lecturer in accountancy, has been reappointed as a member of the Commonwealth Scholarship Selection Committee for one year from 1st September 1993. • Dr. Ignatius T. S. Yu, lecturer in community and family medicine, has been appointed honorary member of the Executive Committee of the Guangdong Preventive Medical Association for three years from 1993.
