CUHK NEWSLETTER A World-class Endoscopy Centre With th e opening o f th e Sha w Endoscopy Centr e a t the Prince of Wales Hospita l o n 22n d April , more patient s sufferin g fro m gastrointestinal diseases ca n be treated without major operations. 'Endoscopy play s an increasingly important rol e i n modem medicine . Many disease s tha t require d ope n surgery i n the past can now be treated by endoscopy, ' sai d Dr . Sydne y Chung, director of the new centre . Endoscopy involve s th e use o f sophisticated 'endoscopes ' carryin g tiny video cameras to probe the inside of the patient's abdomen . Doctors can make accurate diagnosis by looking at images transmitte d ont o televisio n screens, an d perform treatmen t by inserting surgica l instruments throug h small puncture holes in the abdomen . Endoscopy ca n minimize th e risks an d trauma o f operation. And as post-operativ e discomfor t i s reduced and patients wil l recover muc h faster, a lot of hospital cost s wil l be saved. One of the most advanced unit s of its type in the world, it has a floor area of 500 squar e metres , an d houses fiv e endoscopy rooms , a waiting area , an eight-bed recover y ward , an d a ward for cleaning an d disinfection. Besides state-of-the-art vide o endoscopes , special feature s includ e digita l x-ra y equipment, a computerize d imag e storage an d reporting system , an d a closed-circuit T V system fo r al endoscopy rooms . The centr e wil l provid e bette r services fo r patients an d facilitate training of doctors an d nurse s in new endoscopic techniques . A trainin g programme fo r doctors fro m Chin a and Southeas t Asia i s already underway. Entitled 'Asia-Pacifi c Challenge : Hon g Kon g and China', th e programme mark s th e sixth-year cooperatio n between CUHK and the University of Pittsburgh to train the latter's executiv e MB A students . T o enable trainee s t o understand bette r busines s operation s i n th e Asia-Pacific region an d China's economi c refor m an d business environment, lectures and panel discussions were held at the University's MB A Tow n Centr e from 18t h to 21st April , and a field trip to ajoint-venture factor y in Shenzhen wa s organized.
