Born in China, Gao studied French literature at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute between 1957 and 1962. After the Cultural Revolution, he was a playwright-in- residence at the Beijing People's Art Theatre. His plays were trend-setting and controversial and have been performed the world over. Gao settled in France in 1987. He was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1992. Translated by Gilbert C.F.
