The authors also attempt, based upon their empirical findings on such mass social mobilizations, to provide an alternative conceptual framework to analyse the Hong Kong polity, and to render an alternative methodological endeavour investigating social movements by contextualizing the detailed configurations of conflict incidents. Results of the study reveal that social mobilization in Hong Kong gathered momentum during the 1970s, progressed steadily during the 1980s, thereby laying the foundation for the nurture of a civil society in the absence of an independent state.
