Born i n Belgium, Prof. Vanhoutte obtained his BS, MS, and M D from th e University o f Ghent and his Ph.D. from the University of Antwerp. He has received many international honours and prizes, and i s currently vice-president o f the French Pharmacological Society. H e has made significant contribution t o cardiovascular research and was one o f the first few scientists i n the world t o appreciate and study the importance o f endothelial cells i n the control o f vascular smooth muscle tone. Cheng, former president o f United College and former pro- vice-chancellor o f the University, passed away o n 4th February 2001 at the Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, at the age o f 85. A memorial service was held on 23rd February 2001 i n the hall o f Adam Schall Residence, United College. I t was attended b y many members of the University and College alumni. A thematic exhibition i n memory of Dr. Cheng was held on the same day at the Shum Choi Sang United College Archives. The exhibition will be on until the end of August. Dr. Cheng had served the University i n many key posts over a long period of time. He was appointed President of United College i n 1963, a post he held until 1977. For four years prior t o his retirement from the University i n 1979, he was pro-vice-chancellor and concurrently director of the School o f Education. H e was also the founding director o f the Department o f Extramural Studies (no w renamed th e School o f Continuing Studies) from 1964 t o 1970. To commemorate his distinguished service and leadership, United College w i ll establish a fund in memory of Dr. T.C. Cheng. A l l donations should be made payable t o 'Dr. T.C. Cheng Memorial Fund' and al l enquiries should b e directed t o Mr . Philip Lam, secretary o f United College, a t 26097577. Medical Facul ty Honours Teaching Excel lence T wenty-five dedicated teachers were honoured b y the Faculty o f Medicine o n 21st February 2001 at the presentation o f Faculty's Most Outstanding Teachers of the Year Awards. This year the number o f recipients exceeded that o f the previous three years, and the awards were presented by Prof. Sydney Chung, dean o f medicine, i n the lecture theatre o f the Prince of Wales Hospital. The awardees were selected b y secret ballot. Their students based their choices on how well a teacher had facilitated learning i n the medical and health sciences and the application o f medical knowledge i n clinical practice. The award was se t u p t o recognize and encourage excellent teaching i n th e faculty, an d outstanding teachers are expected t o be able t o deepen student's interest i n the subject matter, se t clear objectives, cover an appropriate amount of material, formulate material a t an appropriate level of difficulty, and help students gain a good understanding o f important concepts and principles. New Investment Managers and Addi t ional Funds fo r theStaf fSuperannuatio n Schem e S tarting from 2nd April 2001, members of the Staff Superannuation Scheme w i ll enjoy the service o f four new investment managers and be able t o choose from a wider range o f investment funds. The Trustees o f the Scheme have appointed Fidelity, Baring, Deutsche, and Indocam t o replace HSBC and Schroder's a s th e scheme's investment managers, and introduced two new options for members—'Hong Kong Equity' and 'Hong Kong Index-linked'. Two investment seminars were organized at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 8th and 12th March, during which the new managers presented the portfolios of the respective funds under their charge and the market outlook fo r the rest o f the year 2001. Members were asked t o decide i f they wish t o exercise any option change before 19th March. One major feature of the new arrangements i s that each fund in the scheme is now operated by a single investment manager (see table below), and members can have greater flexibility to opt out of a fund i f the performance of its manager is not satisfactory.
