Medical Faculty Pioneering Treatment for Macular Diseases M acular diseases are among the major causes of blindness in Hong Kong. Two important conditions are age-related macular degeneration ( AMD) and macular degeneration in patients with serious myopia of over 600 degrees. A MD is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly aged over 60 in Western countries. A recent study by the University revealed that serious myopia is rising in prevalence in Hong Kong with 6 per cent of secondary students suffering from it. Together with an ageing population, it is anticipated that the incidents of macular diseases will be on the rise. Current treatment for the above two conditions include mainly laser treatment and surgery. Yet most patients are not suitable candidates for such treatments. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new treatment approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in Ap r il 2000 for treating AMD . The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is the first centre in Asia to conduct clinical trials on the safety and efficacy of PDT in treating macular diseases. Since February 2000, close to 100 patients have received the treatment, and the overall results have been encouraging. B A Faculty Launches First Credit-Bearing Study Abroad Programme The Study Abroad Programme 2001 of the Faculty of Business Administration was officially launched on 10th May at a press conference held at the University Guest House.
