Her active participation in the development of Chinese medicinal research at the University during t he 1970s has c o n t r i b u t ed to the establishment o f the f o rmer Chinese Medicinal Material Research Centre. She was also instrumental in the development o f the School o f Chinese Medicine at the Un i v e r s i t y. Prof. Hu also p l a y ed an important role in the research on Trilex, which involves primarily staff members o f the School o f Chinese Medicine. The project attracted a generous grant o f H K $ 8 m i l l i o n f r o m t he I n d u s t r y Department o f the government and the end product of the research, a herbal tea, is now available for sale in the market. In r e c o g n i t i o n o f t h e o u t s t a n d i n g contributions o f Prof. Hu in botany and Chinese Me d i c i n al research, she was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the government o f the Hong Ko ng Special Administrative Region in 2001. Dr. Lee Shau Kee Born in Guangdong, Dr. Lee Shau Kee has been a c t i v e ly engaged in property d e v e l o p m e n t i n H o n g K o n g a nd other commercial businesses for over 40 years. He is the founder o f Henderson Land Development Company L i m i t ed and has been the chairman and managing director o f the company since 1976. He is also the c h a i r man and ma n a g i ng d i r e c t or o f H e n d e r s on I n v e s t me nt Limited, chairman o f Henderson Cyber Limited, executive director of Henderson China Holdings Limited, chairman of The Ho ng K o ng and China Gas Company Limited, Miramar Hotel and Investment Company Limited, and vice-chairman of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited. Dr. Lee also holds directorship o f Hong K o ng Ferry (Holdings) Company Limited and The Bank of East Asia Limited. Dr. Lee has been a keen supporter of educational and cultural development projects both in Hong Kong and overseas. He is the chairman o f Pei Hua Education Foundation Company Limited, and the honorary c oun c i l l or o f Rehabilitation International. The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty o f Ho ng Kong has also benefited immensely from his patronage and encouragement over the years. Since 1977, Dr. Lee has been a member o f the Ad v i s o ry Boa rd o f the M B A Programmes (previously known as the Ad v i s o ry Boa rd o f the Three-year M B A Programmes), and a member of the Board of Trustees o f United College since 1988. In 1991, Dr. Lee made a most generous dona t i on i n support o f the C U H K - Y a l e S o u th C h i n a S t u d i es P r o g r a mm e, w h i c h has p r o v i d e d fellowships for doctoral students, funds for engaging experienced researchers, and r esou r ces f o r l e c t u r e s h i p s, l i b r a ry c o l l e c t i o n s, research p r o j e c t s, and academic conferences. The research p r o g r amme has enab l ed s u c c e s s f ul collaboration between Yale University and The Chinese University, enhanced the u n d e r s t a n d i ng o f S o u th C h i na b y practitioners in various professions and t h e c o m m e r c i a l s e c t o r, t h e r e b y c o n t r i b u t i ng t owa r ds the c o n t i n u ed development o f Hong K o ng and South China. In 1993, Dr. Lee was awarded the hono r a ry degree o f Do c t or o f Social Science by the University. Dr. the Honourable Simon Li Fook Sean Dr. the Honourable Simon L i Fook Sean has h a d a m o s t distinguished legal career that spanned some 30 years. He studied law at University College London in the United K i ngdom after the war and was called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1951. Upon his return to Hong Ko ng in 1953, Dr. L i first wo r k ed as C r own Co u n s el and later as Senior C r o wn Counsel. He then j o i n ed the j ud i c i a r y, rising from District Judge to Judge of the High Court and Justice of Appeal, finally becoming Vice-President of the Court of Appeal in 1984, where he served until his retirement from the bench in 1987. Dr. L i played a significant role in the smoo th r e v e r s i on o f Ho ng K o n g to Chinese sovereignty. I n 1984, D r. L i a c c e p t ed an a p p o i n t m e nt to t he Independent Mo n i t o r i ng Team on the Assessment Office, whose duty was to monitor the social reactions to the Sino- British Draft Agreement. He was also a member o f the Drafting Committee for the Basic Law, a Ho ng K o n g A f f a i rs A d v i s e r, and depu ty d i r e c t or o f the Preliminary Working Committee o f the Preparatory Comm i t t ee for the Ho ng Kong Special Administrative Region. Dr. L i is equally active in community service. He is currently vice-chairperson of Society of Homes for the Handicapped, Honorary Steward o f The Ho ng K o ng Jockey Club, director of King's College Old Boys' Association School Board, and director o f Rev. Joseph Carra Education Fu nd L i m i t e d. He was once c o u n c il member of the Society for Rehabilitation, h o n o r a r y p r e s i d e nt o f t he S c o ut Association of Hong Kong, chairman o f the Insurance Claims Complaints Board, as we ll as director and chairman o f the Wi d ow and Orphan Pension Board. I n recognition o f the magnificent contributions o f Dr. L i to the j ud i c i a ry service and public welfare, The Chinese University o f Hong Ko ng conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa i n 1 9 8 6. I n 1 9 9 7, D r . L i w a s awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the government o f the Hong K o ng Special Administrative Region. Over the years. Dr. L i and his family have made generous donations to the University, one notable example being the establishment o f the Mr. L i Koon Chun Memo r i al Fund and the Dr. S i mon L i Fook Sean and Madam Yang Yen Y i ng F u n d, w h i c h s u p p o rt r esea r ch and university development, finance student and staff development programmes, as w e l l as the i mp r o v eme nt o f teaching facilities on campus. Mr Richard Liu Sheng Chien A graduate of Taiwan University in 1970, Mr. Richard L i u is currently chairman of Superior Holdings Limited. A most successful entrepreneur who has made significant contribution to the ad v an c ement o f ma n u f a c t u r i ng and commerce in Hong Kong, Mr. L i u is also a keen supporter o f social, educational, a n d c u l t u r a l a c t i v i t i e s b o t h l o c a l l y a n d o v e r s e a s. He is active in promoting Chinese literature and Chinese culture. M r . L i u has on several occasions helped The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty raise mu l t i - m i l l i on dollar donations for the nurturing o f talent and the promotion of academic exchanges. He generously sponsored the first and second G l obal Youth Chinese Literary Awards for the New Century, a new worldwide literary award organized by the Faculty o f Arts, and became the title sponsor of the award. A number o f scholarships have also been set up at the University w i th his generous support. They include the Dr. Tien Chang L i n Technology Innovation Foundation S c h o l a r s h i ps and the R i c h a r d L i u Foundation Scholarships o f N ew As ia College. There is also a fund to support programmes and activities for improving the p r i ma ry and secondary education system o f Hong Kong spearheaded by the University's Faculty of Education. M r . L i u h a s c o n t r i b u t e d tremendously to the development and management o f manpower resources on the mainland. Since 2001, Mr. L i u has supported the Ho ng K o ng Institute o f As i a - Pa c i f ic Studies o f The Chinese U n i v e r s i ty in o r g a n i z i ng ma n p ower management training programmes for the Tianjin municipal government. He has also provided the necessary funds and connections for officials of the Shanghai and T i a n j in Mu n i c i p a l i t i es to attend courses in law, politics, and commerce in the University of California at Berkeley, and at the same time sponsoring master's students f r om Be r k e l ey to v i s it the mainland.
