ULS Launches The Chinese Student Weekly On theWeb T he Chinese Student Weekly is n ow available online. The Un i v e r s i ty L i b r a ry System ( U L S ) was granted the r i ght b y the publisher to scan and u p l o ad the entire pub l i c a t i on w i t h over 70,000 records to the web. Users f r o m the w o r l d o v er c an n o w access the j o u r n a l at (http://hklit.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/joumals/zgxszb) . The project is one o f the Journal D i g i t i z a t i on Projects o f the H o n g K o n g Literature Database o f the U L S . The Chinese Student Weekly was first published on 25th July 1952 by Yau L u en Press and ceased publication on 20th July 1974. Du r i ng the 1950s and 1960s, it was a popular y o u th magazine i n H o n g K o n g, and one w h i c h has nurtured ma ny local writers and artists. Targeting at s e c o n d a ry a nd u n i v e r s i ty s t uden t s, the ma g a z i n e 's contents ranged f r om literature, philosophy, to education and current affairs. Ha r d copies o f the p u b l i c a t i on are kept permanently in the Ho ng K o n g Literature Collection o f the Un i v e r s i ty L i b r a r y. Mainland Teachers Experience Moral Education Hong Kong-Style About 40 primary and secondary school teachers from mainland cities came to New Asia College to attend the Second Seminar on Moral Education from 3rd to 11th August 2003. The event was organized by New Asia College and Beijing Oriental Morality Institute and funded by Mr. Liu Shang Chien, a trustee of New Asia College. During their stay, the participants attended academic talks, visited the Independent Commission Against Corruption and the Central Library in Causeway Bay, and exchanged views with principals from local schools. CUHK Student Ambassadors Help Brighten HK Over 60 students of the Faculty of Business Administration volunteered to be Young Business Ambassadors for the BrightenHK Campaign. The campaign, which runs a BrightenHK portal, was initiated by the Internet Professionals Association, the Outstanding Young Persons' Association, the Better Hong Kong Foundation, and the World Trade Centres Association. It aims to address Hong Kong's need for economic recovery through online promotion on a global scale. An opening ceremony for the campaign was held in Tsim Sha Tsui on 28th June 2003. The Young Business Ambassadors have contributed to the planning and organization of a series of events in the campaign to help rebuild confidence in Hong Kong among locals and non-locals. They also contacted non-government organizations, tertiary institutions, and secondary schools to solicit support for the campaign. Fun Sailing with the HKSPC The University Water Sports Centre and the Student Sailing Club organized a sailing fun day for a group of children and parent members of the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children at the University Water Sports Centre on Sunday. 3rd August 2003. Four sailing boats set sail for a beautiful beach at Wu Kai Sa accompanied by a rescue boat. This was followed by lunch and swimming. New Watergate for Wei Yuen Lake An automatic Watergate has been installed in Wei Yuen Lake by the Estates Management Office to regulate the level of water storage. When flooding causes the water level to reach the warning mark, the Watergate will open: similarly when the water drops to a certain level, the Watergate will close. The lake provides up to 0.7 million litres of lake water for daily use at the University. This includes irrigation, cooling of air-conditioning systems, and flushing. The lake's capacity has been increased by 2.6 million litres in the last two years as a result of the deepening of the lake by 300 mm. Service to the Community and International Organizations • Prof. Wong Sai Peng, professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, has been appointed by the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour as a member of the Appeal Board Panel for three years from 28th July 2003. • Prof. Joseph Lau, director of Centre for Clinical Trials and Epidemiological Research, has been invited by the Commission on Youth as a co-opted member of the Task Group on the Continuing Development and Employment Opportunities for Youth. • Prof. Fok Tai-fai, professor of paediatrics, has been nominated as a member of the Medical Council for three years from 1st October 2003. • Prof. Wong Tze-wai, professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine, has been elected as a fellow qua physician of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) on 23rd June 2003. He has also been appointed as a visiting professor of the College of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University from May 2003 to April 2006. • Prof. Ignatius Yu Tak Sun, associate professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine, has been appointed as a visiting professor of the College of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University from May 2003 to April 2006.
