A Moment of Frankness with Michael Sze M r. Mi chael C.C. Sze ( r i g h t ) , executive director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, was the first guest of the new series of Talking to CEOs: CEOs in the New Century coorganized by the EMBA programme of the CUHK Faculty of Business Administration and RTHK. The show was broadcast on 8th February on RTHK 1 and simultaneously posted on the RTHK website ( http://www.rthk.org.hk). Mr. Sze has amassed a great body of skills and knowledge in management, having worked in the public sector for over two decades. He plans to retire in May this year. Mr. Sze talked about what it takes to get to the top in the public sector, about how he has remained true to his beliefs in the face of difficulties, and about his most satisfying achievements while working for the TDC. He also explained why it is important for top management personnel to retire at the right time. Mr. Sze quoted Mencius's teachings in support of his philosophy that one should be aware of one's limitations, maintaining that in his seven and a half years with the TDC, he was always aware of his own abilities and never took on something that he felt was beyond him. EXHIBITION TRACES CHANG I NG ROLE OF WOMEN C hanges in the roles of women in Hong Kong were recounted in an exhibition entitled 'Women of Hong Kong: Gender Roles in Flux' held from 27th November to 12th December 2003 at the Hui Gallery, New Asia College. The exhibition was organized by the Gender Studies Programme and the Gender Research Centre of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies. It was sponsored by New Asia College and the Department of Anthropology. The exhibition was divided into four parts: 'Home/Work', ' Education', 'Social/Movement', and 'Cultural Representation: Transforming Gender Role, Sex, Love, and Bodies'. Prof. Henry Wong, head of New Asia College, Prof. Tan Chee Beng, chairman of the Department of Anthropology, and Prof. Maria Tam, director of studies of the Gender Studies Programme officiated at the ceremony held on 29th November 2003. Academic Activities at Chung Chi College Annual Education Conference About 260 scientists, academics, and interested individuals attended Chung Chi College's Annual Education Conference on 10th January. The theme this year was 'GenomeResearch: Opportunities and Risks'. The four panel speakers were Prof. Kwok Pui-Yan, professor of dermatology from the University of California at San Francisco and Chung Chi College Siu Lien L i ng Wong Visiting Fellow 2003-4, Prof. Tsui Lap-Chee ( left2), vice-chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, Prof. Dennis Lo (left 1), associate dean (research) of the CUHK Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. S.F. Pang (right J), vice-president and chief technology officer of CK Life Sciences International. Prof. Mary M.Y. Waye (right 2) of the CUHK Department of Biochemistry was the conference moderator. Visiting Artist 2003-4 Ms. Nancy Wolf, a renowned artist from New York, is the Chung Chi College Visiting Artist in 2003-4. She is also artist-in-residence of the Department of Architecture in the second term of the 2003-4 academic year. Ms. Wolf has been actively involved in art in the past 30 years. She has held 12 solo exhibitions and more than 14 group exhibitions in Washington D.C. and New York. Her works have also been collected by galleries and museums. Many of Ms. Wolf's meticulously rendered pencil drawings are related to architectural issues associated with tradition, modernity, post-modernity, and contemporary urbanism. At CUHK, Ms. Wolf conducted a talk at the College Assembly on 13th February entitled The Impact of Contemporary Architecture on Community Life and Tradition — A Personal View'. An exhibition of her work is mounted by the Department of Architecture from 9th to 26th February at 5/F Wong Foo Yuan Building. Research Centre for Translation New Books Renditions Special Issue 2003 The Faces of a Chinese Beauty: Wang Zhaojun This special issue features the most representative poems, plays, stories, and paintings on the celebrated beauty Wang Zhaojun, the Han court lady who married the Xiongnu Khan in 33 BC. These works reveal a broad spectrum of Chinese cultural attitudes and perceptions of women from the 3rd to the 20th century. 272 pages, HK$99 A Silver Treasury of Chinese Lyrics Edited by Alice W. Cheang The song lyric (ci ), which began as a form of minor divertissement in the urban pleasure quarters of 8th and 9th century China, evolved into an important poetic form over the four centuries that followed.
