中大通訊 CUHK Newsletter 中大工程生獲美大學二百萬獎學金 計 算機科學與工程學系范斌獲美國卡內基美隆大學 ( Carnegie Mellon University ) 的博士課程取錄及提供獎學金,包括全數學費及每月生活費。若以五年為 計,獎學金總數超過二百萬港元。 來自安徽省的范斌,於中國科學技術大學完成學士課程後,便到中大計算機科學與工 程學系繼續哲學碩士課程。去年十二月他開始申請博士課程,只花了一個月便獲卡內 基美隆大學取錄。除該校外,范斌亦同時獲伊利諾大學香檳分校、密西根大學、喬治 亞理工大學及美國德州大學奧斯汀分校等多間大學取錄和頒發獎學金。范斌最後選擇 了卡內基美隆大學,因為該校是美國頂級的學府,尤以電腦方面的研究最為出色。范 斌將入讀的電腦科學博士課程於二零零六 US News 的排名為全美第一。 范斌在中大學習的時候,獲計算機科學與工程學系系主任呂自成教授及訊息工程學 系邱達民教授的悉心指導。他的研究興趣包括分布式系統 ( Distributed System ) ,例 如點對點網絡 ( P2P ) 。他與兩位教授便發表了不少關於 BT 等網絡系統的論文,於 學界嶄露頭角,造就了他於短時間獲多間著名大學取錄。專注研究並未使范斌與大 學生活脫節,例如他參加了中大校長杯學生創業比賽,並獲研究生團體組季軍。 呂教授表示為范斌的成就感到很驕傲。獲世界知名學府如此優厚的待遇,證明他的 研究水平已吸引了國際學術界的注目。呂教授更指出范斌並非特例,長久以來中大 工程學院均有不少學生獲普林斯頓大學、哥倫比亞大學、麻省理工、柏克萊加州大 學等頂級學府的取錄和獎學金。例如今年系內另一位本科生亦獲多倫多大學頒贈超 過一百萬港元的獎學金,以供讀碩士及博士課程。呂教授認為這些成就都標誌著中 大教育和科研實力非凡,並鼓勵更多學生進入中大追求高素質的教育和研究。 范斌 (中) 與訊息工程學系邱達民教授 (左) 和計算機科學與工程學系呂自成教授 Prof. Tung Ho Suk Ching Sara, chairperson of the Department of Marketing, has been reappointed by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR as a member of the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene for two years from 1 April 2007. Under the Agricultural Products (Marketing) Ordinance, she will also be a member of the Agricultural Products Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee for one year from 1 April 2007. Prof. Ho Wing Shing John, associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry (Science), has been appointed by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR as a member of the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene for two years from 1 April 2007. Prof. Shek Tan Lei Daniel, professor in the Department of Social Work, has been appointed by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR to serve as a member of the Independent CommissionAgainst Corruption (ICAC) CitizensAdvisory Committee on Community Relations for two years from 1 January 2007. He has also been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Steering Committee on Study of Family Commission from 1 December 2006 to 30 June 2007. Mrs. Anne Carver, professional consultant in the School of Law, has been appointed by the Financial Secretary as a member of the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform for one year from 1 February 2007. Prof. Lee Pui Leung Rance, chairman of the Department of Sociology, has been re- appointed by the Chief Secretary for Administration as a member of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council from 1 April 2007 to 30 June 2009. Prof. Tang Wai Kwong, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for two years from 15 April 2007. Prof. Wing Yun Kwok, professor in the Department of Psychiatry, has been reappointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as amember of theMental Health Review Tribunal for two years from 15 April 2007. Prof. Woo Pui Leng, associate professor in the Department of Architecture, has been appointed by the Deputy Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands (Planning and Lands) as a member of the Appeal Tribunal Panel from 1 February 2007 to 30 November 2009. Prof. Yum Tak Shing Peter, dean of engineering, has been appointed by the Deputy Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands (Planning and Lands) as a member of the Appeal Tribunal Panel from 1 February 2007 to 30 November 2009. Prof. Fung Kwok Pui, head of United College, has been reappointed as a member of the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) Sub-committee on Treatment and Rehabilitation, for two years from 1 January 2007. Prof. Ivan Markov, associate professor in the Department of Architecture, has been appointed by the Building Authority as a member of the Geotechnical Engineers Registration Committee Panel for one year from 31 December 2006. He has also been appointed as an alternate member of the Geotechnical Engineers Registration Committee for one year from 31 December 2006. Prof. Mok Bong-ho, professor in the Department of Social Work, has been reappointed as amember of theAdvisoryCommittee on the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged for two years from 1 February 2007. Prof. Sung Jao Yiu Joseph, associate dean (general affairs) of medicine, has been elected by registered medical practitioners to be a member of the Medical Council of Hong Kong for three years from 24 January 2007. Prof. Chan Yip Fai Eddie, senior instructor in the Department of Finance, has been designated as a fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FCPA) with effect from 13 December 2006. Prof. Ma Lai Chong Joyce, professor in the Department of Social Work, has been elected as the chairperson of the Social Workers Registration Board for three years from 16 January 2007. Dr. Sze Man Man Paul, senior instructor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been granted membership as a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (FCIL) from 2 December 2006. Prof. Che Chun Tao, director of School of Chinese Medicine, has been reappointed by the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong as a member of the Panel of Chinese Medicine Experts for Registration of Proprietary Chinese Medicines from 1 April 2007. Prof. Lin Ge, professor in the Department of Pharmacology, has been reappointed as a member of the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong for one year from 1 April 2007. Prof. Chan Tak CheungAnthony, chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology, has been appointed as a visiting professor of the Cancer Centre at Sun Yat-sen University from October 2006 to September 2009. Prof. Sally Chan, professor in The Nethersole School of Nursing, has been appointed by the Australian Catholic University as an adjunct professor for three years until 31 October 2009.
