The programme will allow 10,000 asymptomatic individuals aged over 50 to undergo free bowel cancer screening tests. Bowel cancer is the second most common malignancy in Hong Kong. The institute recommends people aged over 50 to undergo a fecal occult blood test once a year or a colonoscopy once every 10 years. The details of the project include the establishment of the CUHK Jockey Club Bowel Cancer Education Centre. Through the centre’s education programmes, it is hoped that the prevalence and mortality rate of bowel cancer in Hong Kong can be reduced as a result of better understanding of the disease, its associated risk factors, treatment methods and prevention means. The project also includes the setting up of a community network and the training of Peer Educators for Bowel Health. The opening ceremony held on 3 May was officiated by Dr. Donald K.T. Results of the study have been accepted for publication in the international medical journal Lupus . Prof. Yu Cheuk-man, head of the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, recommends that SLE patients undergo regular tests as early treatment may be beneficial for ameliorating vascular and myocardial diseases. C ardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death among Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) sufferers. The latest research from the Division of Cardiology andDivision of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, CUHK reveals that early detection of abnormal heart and vessel function was enhanced using advanced non-invasive vascular and cardiac diagnostic technologies, namely, vessel stiffness test, tissue Doppler echocardiography and carotid artery ultrasound. The current study, conducted from May 2005 to July 2007, involved a cohort of 87 SLE female patients who underwent a non-invasive assessment of their artery and heart function using cutting-edge imaging technologies. The findings show that 66% of the cohort had abnormal pulse-wave velocity due to increased vessel stiffness, and 25% of the patients demonstrated increased thickness of the vessel lining.
