第324期 2008年10月4日 No. 324 4 October 2008 第三二四期　二零零八年十月四日 No. 324 4 October 2008 哈 佛大學在2008年8月27日至9月1日舉行「幾何分 析：現代與未來」國際會議，慶賀丘成桐教授六秩 華誕。中大數學系有幸擔任協辦機構，數學系和數學科學 研究所並派出五名成員參與會議。在哈佛的美國人文與科 學院舉行的宴會上，中大校長劉遵義教授發表演說，縷述 丘教授的成就、他與中大的淵源和對本校的貢獻，還向丘 教授送贈對聯，上書「巧曆成神筭，絲桐發妙音」。 在會上發言的，有多位微分幾何、代數幾何、微分方 程、廣義相對論和弦理論方面的頂尖專家，當中有兩位 費爾茲獎得主、一位阿貝爾獎得主、九位美國國家科學 院院士，以及來自世界各地的傑出數學家，包括數學科 學研究所的辛周平教授。為一位數學家賀壽而舉行如此 規模、如此多顯赫人物濟濟一堂的會議，是前所未有 的，在可見的將來也難有來者。 數學大師的誕生 丘教授的六秩華誕，事實上也是他悠悠四十載鑽研數學 的里程碑。他在中大肄業，後赴加州大學柏克萊分校深 造，師事數學泰斗陳省身。其後任教於史丹福大學、普 林斯頓大學高等研究所和加州大學聖迭戈分校，現為哈 佛大學William Casper Graustein 講座教授、中大博文 講座教授。 丘教授最為人熟知的工作是解決了卡拉比猜想，證明克 勒－愛因斯坦度量的存在，成為現今弦理論的基石。他 之後還與學生孫理察一同解決了廣義相對論中的正質量 猜想。至於他與李偉光認為熱傳導方程是哈納克不等式 的估計，也對佩雷爾萬和漢密爾頓解決龐加萊猜想，起 到了關鍵作用。丘教授的工作影響深遠，遍及當今數學 和物理學的許多領域。「幾何分析」這一項目是根據他 的早期研究而發展起來的，這些研究工作現今已成為數 學最重要的領域之一。 數學大國夢 丘教授有無窮的精力。他 的夢想是提升中國數學研究 的水平，以期在世界執牛耳。他吸引了中國最優秀的人 才與他共事。丘教授很重視設立研究機構，認為是擴大 影響的良法，因為這些機構可以提供進行前沿研究的環 境，並能培養新一代研究人員。 1993年，丘教授在中大成立數學科學研究所，十五年來 已成長為世界最重要的研究機構之一，它的所有學術活 動，都得到社會捐款資助。繼中大的這個研究所後，他 其後又再成立另外兩個研究機構，即北京的晨興數學中 心和杭州的數學科學研究中心。 社會各界及校方經常邀請丘教授發表演講或指導學生， 他都從不推卻。在他眼中，推廣數學捨此別無他途。為 了鼓勵年輕人鑽研數學，他為高中學生設立恒隆數學 獎。這個獎與其他數學比賽不同之處，在於它強調創意 與研究。這個獎勵計劃很成功，他今年將之引進中國大 陸，相信很快就可以看到成績。 丘教授不但是當今頂級的數學家，也是誨人不倦的老 師，忠誠的朋友，慈愛的父親，盡責的丈夫。他涉獵廣 泛，不囿限於數學，還雅好文史，最近更有詩選付梓。 丘教授對推動香港數學的發展，盡心盡力，無人能望其 項背。正如數學系系主任劉家成教授在哈佛會議開幕禮 時所說：「您為數學系、為中文大學、為香港數學界竭 盡辛勞，我們對您所做的一切，謹致以誠摯感謝。您的 貢獻無人能及，香港以您為榮。」 T he international conference ‘Geometric Analysis: Present and Future’ was held at Harvard University from 27 August to 1 September 2008 to celebrate the 60th birthday of Prof. Yau Shing-tung. The Mathematics Department of CUHK was a co-organizer of the conference. Five members from the department and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS) were in attendance. Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, delivered a speech at the banquet held at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at Harvard. He summarized Prof. Yau’s achievements, as well as his long history with and significant contributions to CUHK. He also presented Prof. Yau with a couplet written on two scrolls that had Prof. Yau’s name tactfully embedded in the text. The conference speakers consisted of top experts from the fields of differential geometry, algebraic geometry, differential equations, general relativity theory and string theory, including two Fields medalists, an Abel Prize winner, nine members of the National Academy of Sciences (US) and other distinguished mathematicians from around the world. Prof. Xin Zhouping from the IMS was one of the speakers. No conference of this scale and calibre has ever been held in dedication to the birthday of a single mathematician, and it is also hard to imagine another one in the near future. A Mathematical Giant Prof. Yau’s 60th birthday was indeed a milestone in his 40-year career in mathematics. After studying at CUHK, he studied under Prof. Chern Shiing-shen, the late giant in geometry, at UC Berkeley. He went on to teach at Stanford University, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and UC San Diego. He is now the William Casper Graustein Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University and a Distinguished Professor-at-Large at CUHK. ( To be continued )
