Stephen Fisher (1st right), JP, former director of the Social Welfare Department, visited the Department of Social Work and had a dialogue with Prof. Chan Kay-sheung Paul, professor in the Department of Microbiology, has been appointed as a member of the Public Affairs Forum, Home Affairs Bureau, Government Secretariat from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2011. Prof. Yu Tak-sun Ignatius, professor in the School of Public Health and Primary Care, has been re-appointed by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare as a member of the Pneumoconiosis Compensation Fund Board for two years from 1 January 2010. He has also been appointed as a committee member of the Fifth Editorial Board of the Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine for the years 2009–13. Prof. Cheung Chin-hung Sidney, chairman of Department of Anthropology, has been appointed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department as a member of the Expert Panel on Application for Inscription of Hong Kong SAR Items onto the Third National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China from 18 September 2009 to 30 September 2010. Prof. Cheng Chun-yiu Jack, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, has been re-appointed as the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Rehabilitation Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for one year from 1 January 2010. He has also been appointed as a member of the Strategy Sub-Committee under the University Grants Committee effective from 21 January 2010. Prof. Yeoh Eng-kiong, Professor of Public Health, has been appointed as a member of the Strategy Sub-Committee under the University Grants Committee effective from 21 January 2010. Prof. Lee Shui-shan, Professor of Infectious Diseases, has been appointed by the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service Governing Committee, with the Hospital Authority Head Office’s agreement, to serve as a member of the Expert Panel on Cellular Therapy with effect from 6 November 2009. Mr. Lim See-wai David, director of Campus Development, has been appointed as a member of the Geotechnical Engineers Registration Committee Panel and an alternate member of the Geotechnical Engineers Registration Committee for two years from 2 January 2010. The event was organized by Year 3 students of the department. Mr. Fisher shared his experiences from various jobs, as well as the difficulties and challenges encountered in the past years. He also analysed changes in the development of social policy in Hong Kong. In response to the students’ questions about his goals and philosophy, Mr. Fisher said a society with social justice, compassion and equality. He pointed out that social welfare sector plays an important role in establishing such a society. 亞洲手語語言學及聾人教育會議 Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education in Asia • 語 言學及現代語言系手語及聾人研究中心於1月28至 30日假校園西部綜合教學大樓舉辦亞洲手語語言 學及聾人教育會議。 約一百二十名來自世界各地的手語語言學學者及聾人教 育的專家出席會議,分享他們的寶貴經驗及研究成果。著 名手語語言學家Prof. Karen Emmorey、研究聾人教育的 Prof. Marc Marschark及致力於亞洲區大學推動聾人教 育的Prof. James Woodward擔任專題演講嘉賓。 手語及聾人研究中心中心更特別於1月30日舉辦「亞洲聾 人教育講座及研討會」,透視各地的聾人教育發展經驗, 為亞洲聾人教育的發展路向提供意見。 O rganized by the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies, the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, the ‘Conference on Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education in Asia’ was held at the Teaching Complex at Western Campus from 28 to 30 January. About 120 participants from across the world presented their research experience and findings. Three internationally renowned scholars, Prof. Karen Emmorey, a well-established sign linguist; Prof. Marc Marschark, deaf education researcher; and Prof. James Woodward, dedicator of building university education for deaf people in Asia; were the keynote speakers. A public session on ‘Seminar and Panel Discussion on Deaf Education in Asia’ took place on 30 January. Participants spoke on the latest in deaf education in their respective countries/regions.
