News in Brief 35 International Leadership Award for Dean of Medicine Prof. Francis Chan, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics, became the first Chinese scholar to receive the International Leadership Award 2018 by the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). An internationally renowned clinician-scientist in gastrointestinal bleeding, helicobacter pylori and cancer prevention, Professor Chan has published over 500 scientific articles, and his research findings have been incorporated into clinical practice guidelines in the US, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Two CUHK Scholars Recognized by RGC Two CUHK scholars were honoured by the Research Grants Council on 25 October in recognition of their excellent research achievements. Prof. Adam Kielman from the Department of Music was given the Early Career Award for the project ‘Popular music and new mobilities in Southern China’ (see pp 30–31). Prof. Patrick Wong, Stanley Ho Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and director of CUHK’s Brain and Mind Institute, received the Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship for his project ‘Dopamine-related genes and language learning’. First Chinese Bestowed with ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award Prof. Tony Mok (2nd left), chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology and Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor of Clinical Oncology, received the award for his contribution to and leadership in lung cancer research worldwide. Considered as ‘a legend in medical oncology’ and ‘the first one to put personalized medicine in advanced lung cancer’, Professor Mok’s main research interest focuses on biomarker and molecular targeted therapy in lung cancer. Much of his research has shifted the treatment paradigm and defined the current management of lung cancer. Gastroenterologist Receives Progress Award The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation presented to Prof. Yu Jun of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics the ‘2018 Scientific and Technological Progress Prize (Medicine)’ on 6 November for her groundbreaking gastrointestinal research in understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of lesions in digestive system and liver. State Key Laboratory Status Affirmed Five Partner State Key Laboratories of CUHK, with specialties on translational oncology, agrobiotechnology, bioactivities and clinical applications of medicinal plants, synthetic chemistry, and digestive disease, were retitled State Key Laboratories on 20 September to offer them more flexibility to collaborate with different mainland research and development institutions. Laboratories Ranked ‘Outstanding’ Among the four laboratories that earned the ‘Outstanding’ ranking in an evaluation of 22 joint laboratories run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and local institutions, three are with CUHK. They are Joint Laboratory for High Density Electronic Packaging Materials and Devices, Joint Laboratory for Biomaterials SIAT–HKU–CUHK and Shanghai-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory in Chemical Synthesis. To recognize the work and achievements of the CUHK research community, Prof. Bai Chunli, CAS President and Doctor of Science, honoris causa of CUHK came to the campus on 8 November to meet with over 40 researchers working at the joint laboratories and present certificates.
