News in Brief 39 Educating the Public on End-of-Life Care To help the public and the healthcare workers respond to the challenges in the ageing city, the CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing held a public event on End-of-Life Care education on 18 August at the Yasumoto International Academic Park. Over 470 attendees took part in the seminar, who benefited from topics on advance care planning for dementia patients and end-of-life spiritual care. The event was concluded by a number of workshops, with one being on clinical ethics in end- of-life care. Getting Students Up for Exercise CUHK and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (HKJC) have joined hands to roll out Fun to Move@JC. Launched on 8 November, a five-year pilot project aims to heighten primary students’ motivation to participate in sport and promote their all-round development. With a funding of over $97 million from HKJC, the project serves 35 primary schools and is expected to reach over 30,000 primary school students and their parents. Collaboration on World Philanthropy CUHK jointly hosted the third World Philanthropy Forum with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Tsinghua University and the University of Hong Kong. The Forum, co-hosted by the China Welfare Institute, opened on 5 September in Shanghai. With the theme of ‘Building a Sustainable Community of Shared Future for Mankind’, it focused on poverty eradication, good health and well-being, high-quality education, sustainable cities and communities, and the partnerships which help achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals. Hosting Stanford’s Bing Overseas Studies Program in Hong Kong CUHK will host the Stanford University’s Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) in Hong Kong. Prof. Harry Elam (left), Senior Vice Provost for Education of Stanford University, visited CUHK and joined Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rocky S. Tuan in an agreement signing ceremony. The first cohort of around 20 Stanford students will arrive in September 2019. They will be able to enroll in courses such as Chinese Culture, Business Environment in China, etc. Visiting Stanford academics will also teach courses such as organizational culture in CUHK. Hub of Paediatric Excellence Established CUHK announced in November the establishment of the Hong Kong Hub of Paediatric Excellence (HK HOPE). Comprising scholars from the Faculties of Medicine, Arts, Education, Engineering, Science and Social Science as well as experts from international partner institutions, this unique platform will work on five cutting-edge thematic areas, including paediatric oncology and neonatology, microbiome and child health, genetics and genomics, undiagnosed disease network and stem cells and regenerative medicine.
