Chinese University Bulletin No. 2, 2018 40 A Fusion Physicist’s Utopian Experiment Dr. Marcin Jakubowski, founder and executive director of Open Source Ecology which is an open source platform of hardware designs required for building a small modern civilization, was invited to deliver the University Lecture on Civility on 24 October under the theme of ‘Assembling the Future: A Social Innovator’s Intriguing Project’. He elaborated on the philosophy and practice of his social experiment. Impact of Medical and Technological Breakthroughs Dr. Victor Joseph Dzau, an eminent cardiologist and the President of the US National Academy of Medicine, spoke at the Shun Hing Lecture jointly organized by CUHK and the Shun Hing Group held on 18 September. He talked on the medical and technological breakthroughs that had shaped the future of health and medicine and their social implications, and encouraged the young audience to participate in scientific and medical research. Business and Sustainability The Hong Kong Chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change jointly organized a forum titled ‘Business and Sustainability’ under the Sustainable Development Goals Forum Series on 10 November. A number of experts and scholars share their insights on how to integrate sustainable development goals into business strategies. Joining the Belt and Road League for Science and Technology CUHK has joined hands with nearly 40 national, regional and international scientific and research organizations from around the world as one of the founding members, and the sole education institution from Hong Kong, of the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO). Initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ANSO is an international, nonprofit and non-governmental scientific organization for identifying and addressing common issues in the Belt and Road Region and promoting science and technology cooperation. Global AI Academic Alliance Established CUHK joined hands with 15 renowned universities worldwide and SenseTime, the world’s leading AI company, to establish the Global AI Academic Alliance at the 2018 World Artificial Intelligence Conference which took place in Shanghai in September. The alliance was founded to boost cross- disciplinary exchanges and promote international collaboration on AI technology, constructing mechanisms and platforms to provide opportunities for AI study, talent training and research developments.
