校長前言 Foreword by the Vice-Chancellor and President 7 賴大家一起攜手延續及達成，使其成 為一所「結合傳統與現代，融會中國與 西方」的世界一流學府。 另一方面，2019年對大學而言，挑戰重 重。作為本港的高等學府，中大不幸地 亦無可避免地牽涉於種種意見分歧及 社會紛爭當中。縱使大學經歷了重大 困難，這些困難卻教我們學會了包容及 彼此尊重。中大珍視並堅守學術自由和 言論自由，皆因大學奉「博文約禮」為 校訓，是追求真理和知識的多元群體。 藉着回顧過去一年的得與失，讓我們 懷着信心和盼望往前看。我深信每位中 大成員皆能繼續盡一己之力，使大學 成為追求學術及孕育知識之理想地。 香港中文大學校長 段崇智 devotion and efforts have carried us far. Together, we have gone from strength to strength. I cannot stress enough my gratitude for all that they have done for the University. As a community, we are dedicated to upholding the unique culture and goals of CUHK: to build a world-class university that ‘combines tradition and modernity, and brings together the East and the West’. On a different note, I would like to point out that the year 2019 has been a particularly challenging one for the University. As a seat of higher learning in the territory, our campus was unfortunately but invariably drawn into the conflict of ideas and opinions in the society at large. In spite of the difficulties we faced, these trials have also taught all of us valuable lessons about inclusiveness and mutual respect. CUHK is deeply committed to the value of academic freedom and the importance of freedom of speech, all the more so because we must always be an inclusive community in the pursuit of truth and knowledge, guided by the motto of the University: ‘Through Learning and Temperance to Virtue’. While we take stock of the past year, we shall look ahead with assurance and anticipation. I know I can count on every member of the CUHK family to continue to pitch in to make our University a better place for academic work and scholarly pursuits. Rocky S.
