Vice-Chancellor's Report 1987-90
Vice-Chancellor's Report offices, namely the Office of Academic Exchange , the Office of Alumni Affairs, and the Office of Industrial and Business Development, established in 1988, which also includes an R & D Contract Administration Unit. ESTABL I SHMENT OF S h a w C o l l e g e The University's fourth constituent college, Shaw College, was officially opened on 2nd March 1990 by His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson, and the Patron of the College, Sir Run Run Shaw. This further enrichment of the University's collegiate system was made possible by a generous donation of HK$110 million by the Shaw Foundation Hong Kong Ltd. The donation came at a most opportune time as the facilities of the three existing colleges had been considerably overstretched by the substantial expansion in student numbers. Preparation work for the establishment of Shaw College began in early 1986 and Prof. C.N. Chen, professor of psychiatry, was appointed the first head of college by the University Council on 10th February 1987. With the setting up of the Assembly of Fellows in June of the same year and the completion of staffing for the College Office in 1988, Shaw College soon swung into full operation. The construction of new facilities for Shaw College is divided into three stages. Completed in stage one in 1988 were a twin-block student hostel with 600 beds and two canteens, an amenities centre, staff quarters, and an education and administration building with a microcomputer laboratory. Scheduled for completion in 1991 and 1992 in stage two w i ll be a 500-seat lecture theatre complex and more staff quarters. Construction work in the third stage will feature another student hostel that can accommodate 300 students. Each year the College holds monthly assemblies and dinner lectures, inviting scholars to give talks on general education topics. The College has also established visiting scholar programmes to promote links and exchanges between College members and internationally renowned scholars. One of the more important programmes is the Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar Programme which invited to the University in 1989 its first visiting scholar , Prof. Yuan-Tseh Lee, Nobel Laureate in chemistry. 19
