Chou K a i-re n o f Econom ics has been appointed by the H o ng K o n g G ove rnm en t to be a m ember o f the P ro visional P ro d u c tiv ity C oun cil. T h e Chairm an o f the C o un cil is the H on. D .R . Holmes, D ire c to r o f Commerce and In d u s try . T h e purpose o f the C o un cil is " to consider the developm ent o f programmes designed to increase p ro d u c tiv ity in in d u s try and services in H o ng K o n g at the level o f the in d iv id u a l un de rta king ; to form ulate p o lic y in connection w ith the p rom otio n o f such p ro grammes generally and in pa rticu la r concerning the fun ction s o f the p ro d u c tiv ity centre and its financing, in c lu d in g the preparation o f an annual budget; to cordinate activities o f the centre and other in stitu tion s engaged in p ro d u c tiv ity prom o tio n , and to advise on the am ount and disbursem ent o f subventions to such in s titu tio n s ; to advise G ove rnm en t on general measures designed to im p ro ve p ro d u c tiv ity at the enterprise le vel.” G IFT FROM JAPAN A n o fficia l ceremony was held on M a rc h 8 at the C entral O ffice o f the U n iv e rs ity where the Japanese Consul-G eneral in H o ng K ong, M r. K in y a N iise ki, presented a collection o f books to the libraries o f the Foundation Colleges. D r. C h o h -M in g L i, the V ice-C hancellor, accepted the g ift in the presence o f the Presidents o f the three F ounda tion Colleges. T h e collection o f books, to ta lin g 487 volumes, was one o f a series o f g ifts given by the Japanese G o ve rn m ent to the new U n iv e rs ity . In J u ly last year, the Japanese G overnm ent in v ite d a delegation from the U n iv e rs ity , led by D r. L i, to v is it universities and in stitu tes in Japan.
