L a i was educated at the G ove rnm en t Vernacular M id d le School (now renamed C lem en ti M id d le School), K in g 's College, L a Salle College and the U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng K on g . U p o n graduation, he w ent to C h un gkin g and afterwards to L o n d o n u n til the end o f 1949. R e tu rn ing to H o ng K on g , M r . L a i was in im p o rt and export business fo r some tim e b u t soon tu rne d to education, teaching E ng lish and translation at Queen's College and St. Paul's Co-educational College, mean w h ile stud ying under P rof. E dm u nd B lunden o f U n i versity o f H o n g K o n g . H e was appointed to the Depa rtm ent o f E ng lish o f the U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng K o n g in 1956 and the D epa rtm ent o f E x tra -M u ra l Studies in 1958. H e spent a year in England d u rin g 1960-61 stud ying A d u lt Education. M r . Education (T o kyo ). A Rotarian and a Jaycee, M r. L a i is active in com m u n ity service. H is hobbies are w ritin g and m usic- record collecting. Chen Chao Shung was bo rn in 1908 in K iangsi, and graduated in 1931 from the Sun Yat-sen U n iv e rs ity . H a ving obtained his doctoral degree from the U n i versity o f Paris in 1937, he returned to China and founded tw o newspapers as w e ll as the H sin Chiang A g ric u ltu ra l School and College. F rom 1950 to 1951, he taught at N ew Asia College. L a te r on, he was in v ite d to teach as a v is itin g professor at several universities in T aiw an , In 1960, he returned to N ew Asia College.
