T h is means th a t 50.36% o f those who sat passed. T h e percentage is therefore greater than the 30.69% last year and the 38.07% in 1964. T h e reason is that there were less candidates th is year than in the p revious tw o years (2183 th is year against 4041 and 3055 in 1965 and 1964 respectively) as qualifications fo r them were stricte r. As from 1966, the regulation requires th a t the candidates pass bo th Chinese and E ng lish in th e ir school-leaving exam ination. T h e successful candidates w ill be in te rview ed by the U n iv e rs ity 's F ounda tion Colleges on J u ly 27 and 28 fo r adm ission. RADIO PROGRAMME ‘‘UN IVERS ITY REPORT" BEGINS T h e "U n iv e rs ity R e p o rt" broadcast by Radio H o ng K o n g every fo rtn ig h t was on the air fo r the firs t tim e on Ju ly 10 th is year. D u rin g his in te rv iew w ith the programm e producer, M r. G raham Thomas, V ice - Chancellor C h o h -M in g L i stressed the im portance o f the programm e as a lin k between tow n and gown when he made the fo llow in g im p rom p tu statem ent: ''W h e n the suggestion was firs t made to me th a t jo in tly w ith the U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng K o n g we w o u ld take pa rt in a regular broadcast programme, I welcomed it most he a rtily, and th is fo r the fo llow in g reasons: A u n iv e rs ity used to be regarded as an iv o ry tow er q u ite detached from the imm ediate needs o f the community. I am afraid th a t sort o f conception o f the u n iv e rs ity has long been given up because o f the m odern developments o f u n ive rsity services to the c om m u n ity. A u n ive rsity o f course, has one o f its basic fun ction s in tra in in g and educating the youths on the one hand and in developing new know ledge on the other. B ut, remember, th a t is o n ly one basic fu n c tio n . T he re are other basic fun ction s o f the u n ive rsity. A n o th e r very im p o rta n t one is service to the c om m u n ity , to meet the needs o f the com m u n ity, and th a t is where a programm e like this, I th in k , w ill serve, "W h e n the Chinese U n iv e rs ity was founded two and a h a lf years ago, I was keenly conscious o f the need to w o rk w ith the c om m u n ity, to get the fu ll s up po rt o f the c om m u n ity, to keep the comm u n ity fu lly in fo rm e d o f what we were doing, and to have the U n iv e rs ity fa cu lty fu lly in fo rm ed o f what the comm u n ity was expecting o f us in service. T h e re should be comm unica tion from bo th directions, and again that is where a programme like th is w o u ld be very useful. T h e Chinese U n iv e rs ity has m any comm unication media to keep o u r friends in fo rm e d o f what we are doing. One o f the m ajor media is the Un ive rsi t y Bu l l et i n , w h ich comes ou t every m on th in tw o languages, E ng lish and Chinese. B u t o f course, the Bul l e t i n being a p u b lic a tio n , its c ircu la tio n is lim ite d to its m a ilin g lis t, w h ic h is rathe r short. T h is k in d o f a programme w o u ld b rin g us in close contact w ith the com m u n ity, to le t the com m u n ity know w hat we are doing. So I take th is o p p o rtu n ity to thank Radio H o n g K o n g fo r its very im aginative suggestion p u t to us th a t we, the tw o U n iversities, w o u ld jo in tly undertake a programm e o f th is k in d .” 2
