UNIVERSI TY SUPERANNUATION FUNDS T h e Superannuatio n Scheme for the Un i v e r s i ty staff was approved by the Un i v e r s i ty Co u n c il on October 1, 1966, w i t h retrospective effect to October 17 , 1963. Every Un i v e r s i ty and College employee entitled to participate in the Scheme contributes five per cent of his mo n t hy salary, and the Un i v e r s i ty a s um equivalent to twelve and one half per cent of his salary, to the Scheme. A t the t e r m i n a t i on of his service w i t h the Un i v e r s i t y, a participant of the Scheme is entitled to receive a sum of mo n ey f r om the Un i v e r s i ty representing his own c o n t r i b u t i o n. Wh e t h e r, and, if so, h ow mu ch of the Un i v e r s i ty c o n t r i b u t i on he is entitled to receive would depend on his age and the n umb er of the years o f his service. SOCIAL SURVEY RESEARCH CENTRE OFFERS SERVICE TO UNIVERSITY'S FACULTY T h e Social Survey Research Centre of the Un i v e r s i ty recently announced that an orientation to the use of computers i n social science research w o u ld he given to faculty and students of the Un i v e r s i ty early next year. I t w o u ld also provide i n t r o d u c t o ry courses in the use of its e q u i pme n t. F u r t h er t r a i n i ng o p p o r t u n i t i es w o u l d be p r o v i d ed to students by means of occasional p a r t - t i me emp l o yme nt in the Centre. T h e Centre's excellent l i b r a ry of I B M cards prepared for social science studies done elsewhere in Asia, together w i t h codebooks for them, w o u ld be made available to students and faculty for purposes of t r a i n i ng and secondary analysis, announced the Centre's D i r e c t or D r . As its staff is fast developing research experiences, the Centre is n ow in a position to provide assistance oil all phases of the research process, f r om the i n i t i al preparation of a research proposal to the final analysis and r e p o r t - w r i t i n g. T h e Centre has a plan to sponsor a series of i n f o r mal faculty seminars. A t present, it is prepared to offer seminars o n such kinds of topics as “Basic Principles u n d e r l y i ng Survey Research", ‘‘Recent Developments i n Advance d Research T e c h n i q u e s ”, " P r o b l ems of I n t e r v i ew i ng i n H o n g K o n g " , etc. Suggestions as to wh at additional things the Centre m i g ht do and what other topics should be i n c l u d ed in the seminar series are welcome . T h e Centre hopes that the Un i v e r s i t y 's faculty member s w o u ld t h i nk about some research projects wh i c h can be related to the services that the Centre can p r o v i de to the Un i v e r s i t y. GOVERNMENT RECOGNI T ION OF UNIVERSI TY HONOURS DEGREES T h e H o n g K o n g Go v e r nme nt recently decided to equate, for the purpose of emp l o yme nt in Pu b l ic Service, the degrees conferred by this Un i v e r s i ty cum. laude and magna cum laude w i t h second and first class honours degrees conferred by other C ommo n w e a l th luniversities. 5
