years with them he set up his own engineering business in Manchester, Massachusetts, which he still operates. In recent years he has also taught engineering subjects at the Lowell Technological Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Grifillan served in the United States Navy during the war and has recently retired from the United States Naval Reserve with the rank of Commander. Since the war, in addition to doing industrial work and teaching, he has served as consultant to the United States A ir Force and the Army. His present major interest is engineering problems of space exploration. Dr. Gilfillan joined Chung Chi College in August 1969. Dr. Thomas C. W. Mak, Lecturer in Chemistry, New Asia College Dr. Thomas C.W. Mak is a native of Hong Kong. After graduating from Wah Yan College , Hong Kong in 1957, he left for Canada and studied at the University of British Columbia. He obtained his B.Sc. (Hon.) degree in chemistry and physics in 1960. Three years later he was awarded a Ph.D. degree in chemistry. Dr. Mak has held appointments as Demonstrator in the physics and chemistry departments of the University of British Columbia, Research Associate in the National Research Council of Canada, NASA Research Associate in the Crystallographic Laboratory of the University of Pittsburgh, and Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the University of Western Ontario. In June 1969 he returned to Hong Kong to assume his present appointment. Dr. Mak's research interests lie in the determination of crystal and molecular structures by X-ray diffraction methods, and he has published about twenty papers in this field. (picture in Chinese section) Dr. Tam Ping-Kwan, Lecturer in Mathematics, New Asia College Dr. Tam Ping-Kwan, born in 1943 in Canton, was educated in Hong Kong. He received a B.Sc. degree in 1964 from this University and a B.Sc. Sp. in 1965 from the University of Hong Kong. Having spent two years as demonstrator in mathematics at United College, he went to Canada to further his studies at the University of British Columbia. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree in 1970. Two of the major scholarships Dr. Tam held during his studies were the Hong Kong Government Scholarship and the Canada National Research Council Scholarship. Before joining New Asia College in September 1970, Dr. Tam was engaged as Teaching Assistant in the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia from 1967 to 1970. Mark, Lecturer in Biology at New Asia College, left for the United States on 4th October to do research in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin. He attended a symposium at the University on "Sequence Determination of Amino Acids in Proteins and Peptides", 27th-28th October. • Dr. Dieter Henrich, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, visited New Asia College on 6th October, and was guset of honour at a reception jointly sponsored by the Philosophy Department and the Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and Research of the College. At the reception he talked on "Consciousness and Transcendence of Consciousness in the German Idealism". Dr. Henrich is a member of the Board of the International Society of Philosophy, and President of the International Hegal Society. He has been Head of the Philosophy Department of the University of Heidelberg since 1965. • Mr. Lay Wo-Pok, Lecturer in Chemistry of Chung Chi College, completed his work for the Ph.D. degree at the University of Bristol and returned to Hong Kong in October. • Mr. Andrew Chan, Dean of Students, United College, left Hong Kong on 30th October to visit universities in Britain as a guest of the British Council.
