The day-to-day functioning of the Libraries and the coordination of such activities will be the responsibility of a University Library System Working Party with the following membership: Chairman: The University Librarian Members: The three College Librarians T h e Cen t r e of East A s i a n St ud i es A new centre within the Institute of Social Studies and the Humanities was established on 1st January, 1971. The new institution, named The Centre of East Asian Studies, will conduct research on Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia in the fields of social studies and the humanities in close cooperation with other institutions and individual scholars. The Vice-Chancellor has appointed as Director of the Centre, Dr. Chen Ching-Ho, Senior Lecturer in Chinese History of New Asia College, and Prof. N. Yamamoto, Visiting Professor of Japanology of the University, as Adviser. Members of the teaching staff of the University who have special preparation in the area of Asian studies will be invited to serve concurrently as Research Fellows. Experts in Asian studies at other institutions will be accepted as Visiting Research Fellows. Graduates of the University and students of the Graduate School, as well as students from other countries with equivalent qualifications, will qualify for appointment as Research Assistants and Visiting Research Assistants respectively. Meanwhile, negotiations with Japan, Korea and Singapore are going on in respect of exchanging Visiting Research Fellows and Visiting Research Assistants. The Centre will be housed in the newly completed building of the Institute of Chinese Studies. The major activities of the Centre will be: 1. To promote international interest in the study of the East Asian region: The Centre shall work closely with universities and academic institutions abroad to carry out research in social, economic and cultural fields of various East Asian countries. 2. To train experts in East Asian studies to serve the University: Research Fellows and Visiting Research Fellows have an obligation to supervise in their specific fields the Research Assistants and Visiting Research Assistants, in addition to their own research responsibilities. The Centre will recommend outstanding Research Assistants to distinguished universities in Japan, Korea and various Southeast Asian countries to further their studies leading to a Master or Doctoral degree, under scholarships granted by the governments of these countries. Upon the completion of their studies, they may be recruited to serve the University. 3. To provide facilities for research and survey for scholars from overseas countries: The Centre shall liaise with the University of Hong Kong, the government of Hong Kong and local academic and cultural organizations to provide Visiting Research Fellows and Visiting Research Assistants with easy access to research facilities. 4. To acquire research materials and reference books: The Centre shall set up a working library of East Asian Studies and shall have as its basic collection 1,200 volumes of books from the Southeast Asian Studies Section of New Asia Research Institute donated by The Asia Foundation and 1,500 volumes of books in the Japanese Language donated to the University by the government of Japan during the past four years. With the help of the University Library, this working library of East Asian Studies shall use the grant of the University for acquisition of reference books and research materials. It shall also seek donation of books from the governments of Japan, Korea, and other East Asian countries. 5. To hold seminars on research projects: A seminar will be held every month for the research personnel to present their research reports. A ll research personnel will be required — 3 —
