The papers they delivered at the Congress were: "Chronology of the Western Chou Dynasty" (Prof. Chou Fa-Kao) "Trade between China, Philippines and the Americas during the Late Ming Period" (Mr. Chuan Han-Sheng) "The Structural Changes in the Central Government of Late T'ang" (Mr. Sun Kuo-Tung) "Chinese Community Leadership in a Colonial Setting — The Case of the Hong Kong Neighbourhood Associations" (Dr. Aline K. Wong) More than one thousand scholars and experts in oriental studies from various regions of the world, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States and countries in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, attended the congress. Among the topics they discussed were: "Irrigation Civilizations", "Religions and Economics in Asian Society", " Traditional Attitudes and Modern Styles in Political Leadership", "The Diffusion of Material Culture", "The Impact of New Technique in Agriculture", "The Role of Law in Asia Society". and "Modern Literature and Creative Ar t ". Prof. A. L. Basham, Head of the Department of Asian Civilization, Australia National University, was President of the Congress. Yamamoto, Visiting Professor of Japanoloey, has been appointed Adviser to The Centre of East Asian Studies (concurrently), with effect from 1st January, 1971. • Dr. Chen Ching-Ho, Senior Lecturer in Chinese History, New Asia College, has been appointed Director of The Centre of East Asian Studies (concurrently), with effect from 1st January, 1971. • Mrs. Elizabeth Fan Lee was appointed Tutor in Sociology, Chung Chi College, effective 1st 1971. Promotion • Mr. Y.B, Leung, Administrative Assistant (Probationary), University Registry, has been promoted to Administrative Assistant from 2nd January, 1971. St a f f Pro f i l es Dr. Raymond M. Lorantas, Senior Lecturer in History, Chung Chi College Dr. Raymond M. Lorantas graduated with a B.A. degree from Grove City College in 1953. He furthered his studies in history at the University of Pennsylvania and obtained his M. A. degree in 1955. While at the University of Pennsylvania, he was a graduate assistant in the Department of History for two years. He was awarded the Penfield Scholarship to travel to London, Paris, Vienna and Turin.
