V I C E - C H A N C E L L OR OPENS T H E F I R ST A R T F E S T I V A L OF T H E H O NG K O N G F E D E R A T I ON O F S T U D E N T S The Chinese Folk Art Nite held on 19th November, 1972 at Concert Hall, City Hall, marked the beginning of the 1st Art Festival sponsored by the Hong Kong Federation o f Students (HKFS). A t the opening ceremony, Dr. Choh-Ming Li, Vice-Chancellor of this University, delivered a speech in his capacity of patron of the Festival. In his message, Dr. Li praised the HKFS for taking the lead in organizing such an unprecedented festival with the theme "Students, Fine Arts, Society", through which students might establish a closer identity with the community. Emphasizing the significance of this first attempt of the HKFS, Dr. Li pointed out that the series of cultural activities that was going to take place would surely give Hong Kong's youth many opportunities to develop their various artistic talents and power of appreciation. Programmes of the Festival, which runs from November 1972 to March 1973, are varied. Apart from the Chinese Folk Art Nite, there are Western Folk Art Nite, Drama Competition, Exhibition of Students' Artistic Works, Federation Choir Competition, International Students' Salon and Students' Experimental Film Festival. COM I NGS A N D GO I NGS . D r . C.Y. Choi, Lecturer in Sociology, United College, presented a paper at the "2nd Asian Population Conference" held in Tokyo , Japan from 1st to 13th November. - D r . Mun Kin-chok, Lecturer in Business Administration at New Asia College participated in the UNESCO/ CIOS Management Teacher Training Course held at the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia from 5 th to 24th November. Mr. Ho Kam-fai, Head of the Department of Social Work, United College, attended the "Seminar on Social Work Training Curricula" held in Bangkok from 13th to 25th November. Mr. T.C. Cheng, President of United College, attended an "International Conference on Japanese Studies" held in Japan from 17th to 25th November, 1972. . A series of special lectures was delivered by Professor G.E. Blackman, F.R.S ., Emeritus Professor of Agricultural Science, University of Oxford, at the University Science Centre: 2nd November Growth Analysis - Introduction 9th & 10th November Growth Analysis as a Tool in Ecology 16th & 17th November The Analysis of Yield Professor Blackman is the Royal Society Visiting Professor to Hong Kong, 1972-73, for a period of four months from September 1972. • To welcome Mr. Robert Atmore, Executive Secretary of Princeton-In-Asia, who was visiting the campus for the first time, an informal concert of Chinese and Western music was held on 16th November in the Elisabeth Luce Moore Library Lecture Auditorium, Chung Chi College, at which Mr. So Chun-Bo played works for the Ku-Cheng, Mr. Thomas Pniewski and Mr. Wong Shiu-Hung played works for the flute and harpsicord by Bach and Telemann. . P r o f es sor Akira Tsugita, Director of the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Osaka University, visited the Department of Biochemistry, United College, on 27th November. Professor Tsugita also conducted a seminar on "A New Subunit of RNA Polymerase" for students of the Department. . E m i n e n t visitors to the United College during the month o f November included: (1) Fr. J. Tonna, a Sociologist associated with the Secretariat of Economic Development in Rome, who visited the Department of Sociology on 2nd November and held informal discussions on the "Sociology o f Religion" with students of the Department; and (2) Professor George W. Wilson, Dean of the College of Arts and Science, Indiana University, on 29th November. . M r . Rene Vienet, Director of the Centre de Recherche et de Documentation sur la literature Chinoise, Universite de Paris , VII’ visited New Asia College on 23rd November. . O t h e r visitors to the University included Dr. John Cowee , Provost of Marquette University, U.S.A., and Mr. Robert H.
