Prof. Ch a n ob t a i ned his B A i n mu s ic f r om The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty i n 1979, a n d his master's an d doctoral degrees i n music ( c omp o s i t i o n ) f r o m the U n i v e r s i ty of Toronto i n 1981 a nd 1985 respectively. H e was a p p o i n t ed coordinato r of the P a r t - t i me D e g r e e Programme i n Music a t T h e C h i n e s e U n i v e r s i t y i n 1989, a n d h e a d o f t h e Graduate D i v i s i o n of M u s i c i n 1992. H e has been chairma n of t h e D e p a r t m e nt of M u s i c s i n ce 1992, a n d sub-dean of the Faculty of A r t s since 1999.
