Current research activities focus on Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, and Hong Kong art. Given a broadly-based education in art, graduates of the department work as artists, art educators, and art professionals in art galleries and museums. They are grouped into National/Regional History, Comparative History, and Public History. A comparative and interdisciplinary approach is adopted, and special emphasis is given to scholarly exchange with other institutions and collaboration in teaching and research activities. The curriculum is designed to cultivate in students interest in the evolution of human civilization, and the ability to apply historical knowledge to their lives and careers. Besides teaching, teachers in the department are actively conducting research and participating in international conferences. The former are geared towards the mastery of the language while the latter cover Japanese economy, culture, society, and literature. The department has established exchange programmes with Japanese universities which enable second-year major students to spend a year in Japan to learn its language and experience its culture. Students can also benefit from a multi-media Japanese courseware, the only one of its kind in the territory. More information can be found on the department’s website.
