degrees were introduced in 1972 and 1981 respectively, and a taught programme leading to the MSc degree was launched in 1994. There were 204 undergraduate major students and about 70 postgraduate students in the department in 1999– 2000. Statistics is a branch of science that deals with the collection, presentation, summarization, and analysis of data. It is fundamental to many fields including business, engineering, medicine, natural science, and social science. The undergraduate curriculum in statistics covers the essential areas of the subject and maintains a good balance between theory and practice. The Risk Management Science Programme was launched to meet the growing demand from various sectors. Students admitted to this programme will have solid training in quantitative risk analysis.
