Besides the medical programme, medical students shall complete the following before graduation, unless exempted therefrom: (a) 12 units of General Education courses* as prescribed by the University and the college to which he is assigned; and (b) two units of Physical Education. Physical Education courses shall normally be completed in Medical Year 1 (except for the transfer students admitted according to Reg. 2.3). 4.1 A student shall complete the Pre-clinical Programme (Medical Years 1 and 2) within a period not exceeding three academic years unless determined otherwise by the Faculty Board of Medicine. 4.2 A student shall complete the Clinical Programme (Medical Years 3 to 5) within a period not exceeding four academic years. Under exceptional circumstances, a student may be granted an additional year at the end of the programme by the faculty board. 4.3 A student who fails to complete the programmes and pass the relevant examinations within the prescribed periods as stipulated above shall be required to discontinue his studies at the University. 4.4 An Intercalated student shall complete the Intercalated Degree Programme in Medical Sciences within a period of one academic year taken outside the above-mentioned prescribed periods of studies. ! 5.1 Medical Year 1 students shall be assessed by the following: (a) departmental assessment; (b) Faculty Examination in the subjects of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and the Behavioural and Social Sciences at the end of the year; and (c) continuous assessment in any format throughout the Pre-clinical Programme as and if considered appropriate by the departments involved in pre-clinical teaching. 5.2 Students are required to pass each individual subject in the Faculty Examination. The pass mark is 50%. Students who fail in one subject with a mark of 40% or above and pass the remainder of the subjects shall be allowed a supplementary examination in the failed subject to be held in August of the same year. Students who fail in one subject with a mark of below 40% will be required to resit the Faculty Examination to be held in August of the same year. Students who fail in more than one subject will be required to resit the Faculty Examination to be held in August of the same year. Faculty Examination results may also count towards the First * Students admitted in 1997–98 and before shall complete 11–12 units of General Education courses.
