118 Part 3• ResearchUnits andUniversity Extensions The Hong Kong Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery Tel.:2609 6231 Fax.:2603 5520 E-mail: janitachau@cuhk.edu.hk The Hong Kong Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery, established in 1997, aims to promote research-based nursing practice in Hong Kong. The centre, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, is based in the Nethersole School of Nursing at the University. The purposes of the centre are to improve the quality and effectiveness of nursing care, promote research in clinical nursing practice, provide training in clinical nursing research, and develop education programmes to advance research-based nursing practice. To carry out its aims, the centre • undertakes systematic reviews on areas of need in nursing practice; • develops and introduces best practice guidelines; • provides consultancy on improving clinical effectiveness; • evaluates the effectiveness of best practice guidelines; • participates in multi-site clinicaltrials evaluating nursing practice; • organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences on evidence-based nursing and midwifery. The HongKong Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery is one of the eight associated centres of the Joanna Briggs Institute of Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery in Australia. The goal of thecentres is to act as leaders in evidence-based nursing in Australasia and Southeast Asia. It was set up by a grant from the Lee Hysan Foundation and support from other agencies,including the InternationalAcademy of Pathology, and the International Association of Chinese Pathologists as well as local philanthropists. Based at the Department of Anatomicaland Cellular Pathology, it organizes junior and senior fellowship programmes for pathologistsfrom mainlandChina to undergo clinical training at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Short courses are periodically organized on campus and teachers from the department are senton lecture-tours on themainland. Ithas reached an agreement with the Department of Pathology of th e Univ ersity of Br itish Columb ia (UBC) in Canad a which enab les a pathologist from UBC to visit and teach in the department and on the mainland each year.
